Could this be best HT speaker in Australia?

  • One of the design requests was modularity, hence all the boxes. Main reason was to keep the weight down, and make it easier for me to move.    Even still, each cabinet is still quite heavy -

LOL, that's hilarious. I assume Paul still hoists them up onto a ladder or something outside to test them?

(P.S. they look awesome)

Do you know any plans for the crossover? FIR for the tweeter? LR for everything else?

You really wouldn't want to see these on top of a ladder ... that really would be hilarious, in a death by falling speaker kind of way. For the midrange and treble testing, we use a custom built steel turntable which can be hoisted to 3.5m at the turntable level. This allows off axis measurements, which are critical for the tweeter-mid crossover. For some of the testing we also use a hydraulic scissor lift.

Crossover is linear phase for all 3 networks. Being a satellite speaker, it is actually designed to reach 80 Hz. We maximise dynamic range in this way.

Speakers done.  Should get them maybe next week, pending sorting out shipping.

More comments from Paul:

All testing complete.

This is showing the off axis response of the tweeter and compression driver. Each line is a 10 degree increment, so you can see that at 30 degrees, at the nominal 60 degree total beamwidth, we have constant directivity above 3k. 10 degrees is very close to on axis. 20 degrees and 30 degrees steps down but the trend is fairly flat. This is showing only the tweeter with just one broad parametric filter to flatten out the response. You will notice that some peaks and dips are consistent with angle yet others change off axis. We use this information to decide how to correct the axial response. If we only look at the axial response, we'll make bad decisions.

That's a very well behaved response!

Not sure if the response image from above worked, re uploading:

Could the amps be HYPEX?

Superb! very well behaved off axis....noice, very noice

I just went back through my messages, its been 12 months since we spoke. Nice to see it coming to a conclusion. Seems like Paul owes me a spotters fee :D

The latest Hypex (Fusion) integrated DSP amps .... which I have just received (lovely), don't do linear phase filters.

... but it could be a custom build using their 'DLCP' DSP board.

Yeah pretty sure not Hypex. Don't believe Paul had these custom built either.

Has it been 12 months Pete !? Geez, where has the time gone....

I still want to follow up on the room treatment we were originally discussing, after getting the speakers in.

I also have our first baby due in 2.5 weeks, so this hobby might come to a grinding holt  for a couple of weeks.

Nice! wishing you the best. My only advice for new parents, well two bits of advice

1. Do what YOU feel is right. Every wog and his dog will tell you how to do it...mostly not helpful. My sister in law has a 16? week old, and a stupid app on her phone telling her when the developmental changes (updates I call them) should happen. Creates masses of anxiety

2. In saying that, onzies with zips....the greatest invention ever! It must have been the birth child of Hitler and Stalin who invented those with buttons or studs. There is nothing worse at 2:00am trying to figure out stud pattern. If you are given them, donate them to charity. Fill your drawers with the zipped versions only

Amen to that. And the Bonds ones zip from bottom or top. And they go further up the chest leaving no skin exposed to cold winter air.

Yep, or the Aldi baby week ones....godsend

WOW...you can get babies at Aldi...

That takes shopping to a whole new level...:)

@Paul Spencer,

can you give us any details of the amp/DSP solution for these speakers?

cheers

The modules have 3 class D amp modules, each with 500W into 4 ohms or 250W into 8 ohms along with linear phase crossovers and PEQ filters on all inputs and output channels. Like MiniDSP units, these have enough output PEQ filters to tame most workable designs but there are also way more input PEQ filters than I've ever needed to use. The amps have low distortion, low noise floor and a flat frequency response. Class D means light weight (which really helps here) and low heat (which is also handy in this situation where they are being installed behind and AT screen).

Thanks for that.

Too late on the app, the Mrs has been using it during pregnancy. Hasn't seemed to overly stress her out at this point though.

Great suggestion on the zips

wow, they look fantastic.

will you run subs also?

Mike

  • Author

Yeah they're designed to be crossed over at 80 Hz, so subs is a must.

I prefer separate subs, it reduces the demands on the mains and provides more flexibility to optimise positioning.

Part of the early discussion on the design was about size, sensitivity and extension. They are related. Before we even had that discussion, we took some in-room measurements and discovered that in this setup, there wasn't an integration advantage in having bass from the mains. In other words, the subs could be positioned to work just as well. With that in mind, we were able to maximise on sensitivity and minimise on extension, weight and size.

You wouldn't think so to see them in the flesh, but these are technically speaking "small satellites."

Very nice.

Are you getting Paul to build some subs for you as well?

  • Author

No I'm good with my current subs.

I may look at getting a more low profile cabinet in the future. But this will be just to allow to move my screen further back (subs behind screen), and not for performance improvement.

Very nice indeed, what a project. I have built two 15" folded horns, Paul's design. Then I built four Atmos speakers, Paul's design. Just started on rebuilding my four surrounds, Paul's design with the same 8" coax as the Atmos. These match the 8" coax in my Seaton Cat 12c's. Realy pleased with Paul's work. We had done remote room measurements before I started on the subs. I'm a bit of a DIYer so like to build my own. Now if I sold my Cat's..........

all of my speakers are Paul's design

PSE144, bass cabinet is one of his flatpacks, T20 tapped horn sub is his design

He does great stuff

Mike

Yes, if I were to build 3 of these, my 7.2.4 would all be Red Spade Audio. Might have to look into it...
