darth vader Posted October 22, 2017 Posted October 22, 2017 (edited) I've been kicking this can around the carpark for a while now. I think I have worked up the gumption to make a move on it. My DTQWT MkII have JA8008 and Audax TW034 along with the twin 10" eminence woofers. Some of you may have seen Troels has now offered what he calls a DTQWT-mkIII-flat. I am of the view that the Mk-III might be sonically great, but it looks like a box of busted hammers. The MkIII flat still keeps the sleek look and could be a good thing. The Mk-III-flat requires a few crossover changes and the JA8008-HMQ driver. I managed to buy a pr of Seas T35's and spare wave guides. These need no xover change to install into the MkII if I read things right. So I'm set to go for a tweeter swap, and with the MkIII flat kit I should be able to swap the older JA8008 for the JA8008-HMQ. Happy days...the DTQWT MkII is now a MkIII. (sounds so simple doesn't it...lol) Ok, so after the cost and graft, that job is done and I'm in MkIII land, with angels weeping out of my new improved speakers... So, left over is 2 JA8008's and 2 Audax TW034. Back to kicking the can around the car park again, me thinks to self... Buy one SEAS MCA12RC 4" and xover kit from Jantzen, use JA8008's and one Audax TW034, and got the makings of an 8008 centre. Troels tells me to make older JA8008/Audax work in the centre, order old kit from Jantzen (specs supplied). Seems can kicking made a goal. Looking like it could work out. My Mk-II cabinets were made by Arronmar Acoustics and are impeccable. I could not make cabs as good as them in my dreams. I contacted them about making an 8008 cab. It appears they can make matching cabinet to Troels specs with MDF baffle for reasonable cost and can also make matching baffle from Birtch ply. I'm curious as to if anyone else may be interested in this kind of project. It wont be pocket change but also wont cost a sheep station. The goal is to end up with a DTQWT MkIII flat and an 8008 centre for a reasonable outlay from a MkII DTQWT. I'm happy to go it alone, but I'd be really happy to find someone that has also thought of this and maybe work together. I'm pretty nieve at this kind of thing. Some help would be appreciated. darth vader Posted October 25, 2017 Author Posted October 25, 2017 It is one of those projects that will no doubt take a long time, but I'll keep you informed as things progress.

Sounds like a great project - Dan,And you get different speakers of sorts in the deal- hopefully in the better category and not just different although our ears have short memories or is that our brains ?Will also watch with interest. darth vader Posted October 25, 2017 Author Posted October 25, 2017 I hope so Clive. I dont think Troels is very keen on the Mk III flat face. He put a lot of work into the stepped baffle MkIII and I think he sees the flat face Mk III as a compromise of sorts. In my mind I feel it should be an improvement on the Mk II. Using the original drivers and a tweeter in a new centre speaker offsets the cost of the upgrade to a degree.
swervyn Posted December 30, 2017 Posted December 30, 2017 @darth vader Just been looking at his 8008 centre actually, am curious if you don't mind me asking roughly what you were quoted to make the cabinet? Figured all the parts are about $1000 plus postage from Troels, (any idea of freight?) so add the cabinet on top of that, may end up with a good, reasonably priced centre. Or would it just be easier to buy a good second hand centre? ho hum That guy must never sleep, so many different projects and pretty regularly updated
BioBrian Posted December 30, 2017 Posted December 30, 2017 I've been pondering all this too. My DTQWT-12s are the Mk 2 version, and the easiest upgrade is to the "Flat" variety. I've tried the old JA8008s in another setup with good results, but would the HMQ Flat version be worth the large outlay? (I already did the T35 upgrade, which included new XO as well as tweeter). In my case, "Flat" would only be another expensive half-step towards the full Mk 3. And I also think if I went to the trouble of building a Troels Centre, I'd have to jump straight in with the HMQ version, otherwise the same nagging trip would happen all over again. Freight: my recent AT 3WClassic XO kit included 130 Euro shipping, so chuck in a couple of 8" drivers, and it could be similar, or more. Ask Jantzen: they're very helpful. (Nothing is posted from Troels - you buy it from Jantzen, and it's posted from their sister company in Poland).
darth vader Posted December 30, 2017 Author Posted December 30, 2017 (edited) @swervyn The quote was about $600. For the quality, its a fair price. @benah63 @BioBrian Makes sense to go straight for the HMQ from the get go. Only reason I was considering using the 8008's in the centre is they would be available from my MkII's. As much as I'd like to go straight for the HMQ there is the cost. Not prohibitive but makes sense for me to use the 8008's. I'm curious as to what XO upgrades you had to do with the T35 upgrade. I have a pr of T35's. Mine currently have Audax. After inquiring with Troels he told me no XO upgrades were required to use them, but that advice seemed to contradict what I think I read in his web pages. I'm a tad confused there. I've got no doubt that the proper MkIII would be sonically better, but I'll admit, I hate the look of them. And the MkII is no slouch, I feel they hold their own against many much more expensive speakers. Edited December 30, 2017 by darth vader 1
BioBrian Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 @darth vader Yes, it looks like my T35/old JA8008 version has been superseded by the "Flat". Having slept on it, I think I still wouldn't do the old Centre design, just because of the time thing. The value of the time spent making my DTQWT enclosures was about 4 times the material costs, so one needs a bit of self-respect somewhere in the formula! Still looking for the ideal use for the older JAs. I completely agree with your last sentence - most other speakers just don't do it after hearing these.
swervyn Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 Saw your build pics on the DTQWT-12 on Troels website Brian very, very nice! 1

Just rout the holes 0.4 mm bigger for when the inevitable strikes - no other changes necessary. Sorry for the wet blanketism!
