redeye1964
I recently received a Dual 1216 turntable, unfortunately it was sent without the transport screws wound out and the plinth is damaged around the base spring holes. Are there any suppliers of plinths where i could purchase one - not too worried about appearance, more structural integrity
EV Cali
Could you post a couple of pictures of the damage . It could be an easy repair.
redeye1964
I'm considering trying to make a new piece out of thick perspex using the broken piece as a template - will be tricky getting the holes exactly centred.....if l can't get a replacement plinth
EV Cali
I do not think you are likely to find a replacement plinth in Australia. Although there appears to be some cheap on the American ebay site, post would probaly make them too expensive. It could be repaired by cutting out the damaged parts and replacing with new material but it would probably be just as easy to replace the whole piece with plywood , not Perspex. Once you have a rectangle the same size as the existing piece you can draw round the original and then cut it out with an electric jigsaw. Centering the holes and then cutting them out with a small hole saw would not be a problem. If you are not handy there is probably a small Joinery works near you that could do the job. EV Cali
Yes it would be better than the original chipboard.
audiofeline
Or you could build up the broken area with builder's epoxy filler, you can get a small pack with two tubes (part a+b) in Bunnings for about $15. Mix it together, and apply it. When it is curing, it can easily be cut, drilled, sanded, etc. After about 30mins it is rock hard. If you do make another top, use hardwood ply in preference to softwood ply. It will probably sound better than the chipboard they originally used. While you are repairing it, you may as well put some reinforcing brackets on the inside corners of the plinth, either glue+screw triangular reinforcers, or buy some small metal brackets from the hardware store and screw them in.
redeye1964
l've built a new one - 4"x2" with a 3/4" top (pine) and 5/8" inset that the tt sits in. lt's very solid, glued & screwed....plenty of mass. Haven't decided on a finish but probably just sand it and spray paint it black Photos here Edited October 21, 2017 by redeye1964
