Hey guys, my sub makes a humming sound and it has finally got the better of me.

It is now starting to annoy me.

Can anyone recommend a cost effective solution? I don't have the funds available to buy a high end power conditioner but would a power board with filtering do the trick?

Hopefully I can avoid spending a fortune, any brands to avoid or look out for? :)

Cheers

Power conditioner/filter/regenerator wouldn't fix hum... Sub-woofer is best connected directly to a mains socket anyway.

What brand/model is your sub?

Do you know if the hum is coming from the woofer (likely cause is ground loop) or a transformer inside?

First thing I guess is to disconnect all I/Cs from the sub (so the only cable is the power cable)... is the humming still there?

Does the sub hum when not connected to anything other than an electricity outlet? If so, the problem is definitely the sub. It may be as simple as a loose retaining bolt on a transformer, or degrading power capacitors.

If the hum goes away when other components are not connected it will be a ground loop. The easiest fix for this is an isolation transformer in between the connection to your AVR. You could use one channel on this stereo one. An isolation transformer won't work if the hum is there when only the power is connected to the sub.

If you don't want to spend the $ on an isolation transformer to sort out a ground loop, the first places I'd be checking are TV antenna amplifiers/boosters and any computer connections (try disconnecting them from your system).

Sorry for the late response, I'm actually away for work at the moment, thanks for the thoughts. When I get home I will give it all a whirl to see if it's actually the transformer!

Also make sure the sub is not on a different circuit from the amp/receiver. I once had a humming sub and the problem went away after changing the circuit to the same as the receiver.
