Hawk-eye Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 (edited) I have a BW750 and I'm having some issues as mentioned before regarding new HD channels but also having some luck. I've recently added new channels 10HD (channel 13) and 9HD (90) and though I get sound they are not viewable 'live' through the Panasonic's tuner, they record fine on the PVR to watch from the player later. Surely if the PVR could not handle Mpeg4 then I would not be able to record them? Or is the signal somehow downgraded after recording? My main issue is channel 74/ 4ME which acts very odd. Again I can't view it live, and this time there is not even sound. However the picture does record, but again there is no sound when watching later on. The other strange thing is that this recording cannot even be fast-forwarded; I just get an error message saying this operation cannot be done at this time, yet manual skip works. All very strange. Also I note Mpeg4 is mentioned in the manual, under the glossary but I can't seem to find any mention if this model can or does use it. I'd find it strange if this format was referred to in the manual, but then would not be able to be used by this model, unless it's referring to use in USB mode. Edited March 12, 2016 by Hawk-eye
cwt Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 Panasonic’ssecond generation DMR-BW850 Blu-ray recorder offers a few new features that make it a tempting all-in-one option for any lounge room. Firstly it features an improved MPEG-4 compression system that lets you squeeze up to 240 hours of high definition television recordings onto the hefty 500GB hard drive ($2199) – although it only holds 72 hours in “Full HD”. There’s also a DMR-BW750 with a 250GB hard drive ($1979 It uses mpeg4 for compression to fit more onto the hard drive hawkeye ; it seems to be a generation to old to get mpeg4 tuners http://eng-au.faq.panasonic.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/34853 . I suspect your sound playback problems are to do with lack of aac decoding ; they are using an obscure codec type its been reported I have a BW750 and I'm having some issues as mentioned before regarding new HD channels but also having some luck. Tober27 Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 A bit more off topic. With the new mpeg-4 channels, and more to come, I'm looking at upgrading my BW850, which I really love, to a newer Panasonic. The one that seems to be the best currently is the DMR-BWT955GL. It seems to do everything I want, and the best upgrade, with the exception of 4K Blu-ray playback. Panasonic's first stand-alone 4K Blu-ray player, or UHD Blu-ray, will be out later this year, the DMP-UB900, but that is just a player, not a recorder. So I guess what I was hoping existed was a model that combined both, which doesn't exist yet (or there may be one in Japan that we're not getting.) So is it likely that is something they'll put out in a year's time? Is there a model that does more than the DMR-BWT955GL, or is it missing any features I've enjoyed on my BW850? I know it's last year's model, but there's no newer one scheduled for this year? I haven't seen a good forum discussing the BWT955, so thought I'd see here what other users think, or what anyone else thinks is a good upgrade. Thanks for any thoughts/opinions.
Tober27 Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 In response to me, I'm impatient so bought the DMR-BWT955GL. Is pretty cool, very much what I expected. Would love to make it region free, so hopefully someone somewhere is doing mods. So if anyone else was wondering, there it is.

Edit: The above seem legit although I'm not sure on how the "offer a donation and well give you the FW works" Anyway, stumbled on the fact that Panasonic will make any device region free if you take it into a service centre (for free too!) - how cool is that? Give them a call on 132 600 to arrange a time Regards Peter Gillespie Edited July 8, 2016 by pgdownload
Tober27 Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 Oh yeah, I saw those guys' website a while back. I'd rather they give a set price than their weird donation thing, as other people I came across said they got no reply when asking how much was enough to donate. If desperate, maybe I'll try contacting them later. And it does sound awesome that Panasonic service centres do that, but they will make it region free for DVD only, not for Blu-ray. I called them to see. And while yeah, region free DVD is good, I want that too, it's not my priority. I want region free for Blu-ray and 3D Blu-ray (I don't know if that's different.)

Sorry for dragging up an old thread but this has been a total pita for me because the only open/close button is on the top of the player which is impossible to get to when mounted in my cabinet. I have been using a pop stick to open and close it since I got it; that was until now. Quite by accident I found that an old DVD player remote would open and close the tray. I have now used that signal to teach my harmony remote; problem solved! I hope that this helps someone else with a similar problem. I am not sure if this problem carried through to the new 4K players.
