Hi StevenB, I've been through similar exercises importing speakers from the US recently. You will need to get a quote off the seller for freight and then add 10% onto the cost of freight to cover GST on the freight service (not duties due on the freight component). Then you need to add 15% (5% duty and 10% GST) to the value of the goods. Also add $30-$50 for "miscellaneous" handling fees etc. oh - one other thing to be careful of in your calculations - Paypal gives a shocking foreign exchange rate, so add a percentage point on for that too! It should be a pretty straight forward exercise.... depending on the shipping company, they will likely ring you when the goods reach Australia and request that you pay the taxes before they deliver. (that is assuming htey don't send one of your speakers to Canada like FedEx did to me!!) Anyway good luck. If you go ahead, then I would be grateful if you would be so kind to reply back or PM me to let me know the final costs since this is an option that I am also seriously considering. In fact you may have found you had some stiff competition if a second hand unit comes on the market in Aus Cheers Richard

I imagine wiht the a5cr being on run out theres be a bit of a glut of them on the uk market. with the mf a5cr made in taiwan as you go closer eg in HK etc you will find lower pricing again which makes sense due to the lower shipping. plus historically places like HK always been cheaper for all brands to what we pay in oz so am sure thats playing some part there as well.

I found it a better performer than hte a308cr prior that underwhelmed by comparison even though UK made and had an even higher rrp of $5k. moving manufacturing offshore has defintely brought benfit to the end price for mf gear to us and theres been no loss to quality the grade of components used is still part for part when made in the UK and build quality and fit and finish top notch as before

MVPjack Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 I don't think you pay duty on a second hand item.

Is freight on speakers calculated by weight or volume or both?Roughly how much out of interest?

I know that I did pay duty on both of my speaker purchases - one was a private sale and one was from a registered business. I also spoke to a customs official at the time and I am 90% confident that they confirmed the duty of 5% on second hand speakers. The duty % may be different on new items, and it may be different depending on the type of good.

Hi Lyle, Not exactly sure but I think it is both and they charge you whatever is the greater.... I think that USPS is the much cheaper option compared to UPS, but they have certain size limits on what can be sent. FYI - I purchased a set of Paradigm S4's at a cost of $2k USD. Freight ended up costing $700 USD fully insured. From memory I paid $300 duty (10% GST and 5% Duty on speakers) + $70 GST on the freight Service. There may have been some ancilliary "customs handling" costs or something. I also lost quite a bit on the Paypal Foreign Exchange rate. All up cost me just under $A3.3k ish..... (edited to include Exchange rate) Hope this helps. Cheers Richard Edited August 12, 2008 by pxpx

I got prices off my nephew in Calgary.S4 Cherry RRP in Aust is $5K and other colours $6K. Assuming the street price is 20% of that ($4K and $4.8K respectively), looks like you did well. Edit Add: Apologies to the OP for taking this OT. Edited August 12, 2008 by Lyle

Edit Add: Apologies to the OP for taking this OT. Lyle - feel free to PM me. Bare in mind that these were 2nd Hand v.1 S4's, so not quite as good as you suggest. However, considering the likelihood of picking up a second hand set in Aus is close to zero, then that was pretty much my only option. Also - I could easily be wrong, but my research suggested a huge reluctance to move away from RRP for the sig's..... I would be very surprised if you could get 20%. People with much me tore expereince in this game than I suggested 5% was about as good as I could have hoped for on the sig range..... Cheers Richard Edited August 12, 2008 by pxpx

richardweaver8 Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 what price do you guys think the A5cr should be worth? Can anyone help explain if there is a difference between the A5.5 and A5cr? I understand that the "cr" is choke regulated. I am assuming the A5.5 is the current integrated amp, but i can't find anything specific on the A5cr on the MF website. Is the A5cr just the preamp?

Is the A5cr just the preamp? the a5cr pre is just that a dedicated 2ch pre. it is choke regulated with two massive frame psus on top off the torroidal psu. it has a dual mono construction. and fully featured with remote control and ht bypass. what's it worth ? what the market is willing to pay. given the $4k rrp on run out from a retailer i'd expect $2.5-2.9k and have seen some a5 integrateds which retail at same rrp go for that. 2nd hand on ebay you'd pay less. the a5.5 is an integrated just like the a5 integrated before. the a5cr pre you'll find on the mf site under archived products, with product info & reviews etc. I did a bit of a review of both the pre & pwr myslf which you'll find in the review subforum.
richardweaver8 Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 Thanks Al, - not sure how I missed the A5cr on the website - I found it this time round! Interesting amp... wish I had some more time to research it, but I prob should try and get some work done this arvo..... Are you saying that the $2.5-$2.9 are the run out prices for new A5cr's? Does that mean there is a replacement product..? Anyway - just had a read of your review - looks like you were impressed enough with the pre/power combo! Thanks again for your comments.
MVPjack Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 Is the MF CD and pre on ebay at the moment imported or local???

Thanks again for your comments. run out prices jsut based on what I've seen of the a5 integrated. not seen any a5cr pre or pwr on run out. I'd say both jsut quickly sold on their own. you could try ringing aroudn dealers. there is no direct replacement for the a5cr pre-pwr which is what makes them sought after I guess. the only closest is the A1 FBP pre and superchargers which are a bit of an odd ball combination if you ask me and think at a combined higher price bracket. the a5 pre is a much better pre and a5 pwr with a ton of grunt as a power amp overall over the a5 integrated. but the integrated is a fine piece itself and if any around and looking for a very nice integrated with plenty of power under the hood and a great pre stage then thats worth buying too at probably half the price ! mvpjack said: Is the MF CD and pre on ebay at the moment imported or local??? dont know, have you thought of asking the seller ? he'd probably have a better idea that anyone else
