Off-topic Post Counts

C'mon guys, without wanting to start another major argument here, why is it ok for mello to add whatever he likes to his sig, such as the dig at me where he accused me of "sticking up 711's" and no-one bats an eyelid but as soon as Andrew does something you guys don't like it's offensive?

Be fair for crying out loud. :(

Oh and mello crossed the line with his language but none of you seemed to care about that either.

Just my 2c worth.

and you lot know he's not around.................your mate has a history of shall we say suspect signiatures.................he knows the w will provoke mello

you be fair for crying out loud...................you may have noticed for quiet a while that i've stayed out of mello's battles............you lot would do well to keep to yourselves for once & stop jumping in everytime your mate upsets people..................it really is a joke

the sig is offensive & should be removed.................game over

as cowardly as hiding in OT throwing around accusations and inciteful posts in the hope of getting a response from me ... I mean nobody would do that, would they

who the hell would want to talk about you

Well done for changing the sig Andrew.

OK, The posts (and PM's) have been coming faster then I can type my replies.

Pete, You're right, Aloy, good call, AndrewW, you've changed you sig.

Oh dear... you really have lost the plot Andrew. You've turned into a nasty, spiteful, and childish individual.

And that is totally uncalled for. :angry2:

Just typical, as I said earlier Mello can say and do no wrong but heaven help anyone who dares to defy the mighty Mello.

The whole thing makes me sick to my stomach. :angry2::angry2::angry2:

Andrew has changed his sig, it was only a Simpsons quote, so maybe everyone can lay off now.

If people are that paranoid that's their problem, besides isn't Mello's favourite thing to use innocent quotes against others and then say "oh I didn't mean it that way"?

A bit of perspective would be good. :angry2:

Now would be a good time to stop dragging out the issue <_<

My favourite quote:

"Pearce off Jack, Gibbs On" - the Twelth Man

Interesting now that the vote continues to be down to the wire......

Looks like it's down to option 3 after all...

Hey PZ, you got some inside juice on the policy making that's going on behind the scenes?

I'm just wondering, because "the Powers that Be" haven't replied at all to those of us who have requested some clearly spelled out guidelines and "policy" to this whole "poll/debate" melange.

I mean - who knows whether there's a "Mugabe" policy in place - whereby the poll is essentially pointless, as the decision over what is going to be done has already been made... and the "debate" is just a way to "feel the water", prior to taking the action that was going to be taken anyway.

Given that it hasn't been stated otherwise; there might also be a measured and thoughful policy where the fundamentals of a Democratic system that requires a majority of at least 2/3rds before any motion is passed may be adhered to.

I guess it just depends upon how much weight a "poll" has in the minds of the "Powers that Be", and whether they want to run the forum one kind of way or the other.

Seeing as how there's not been a truly definitive response - we're assuming that any results from the "poll" are going to be of any influence at all...

It could turn out that all we're doing is going through the motions posting our opinions, whilst providing uproarious entertainment for those who've already decided what's going to happen.

Take your pick. <_<

I guess we'll all find out out once the "poll" is closed - whenever that'll be... seeing as how a cut off point hasn't even been mentioned.

This "dance" could go on indefinitely! :o

Well, I don't have any inside info, just theories....... B) Please bear with me on this :D

I think the idea is to reduce the number of posts in the OT section as a way by the admins to reduce some of the OT "punch-ups" which reduce the overall interest the board may have to "guests" or "lurkers" while at the same time taking a tougher stance on OT posts (and the ensuing "punch-ups") that start in the DTV sections and finish up in OT.

Due to internet trouble at Xmas, I was away for quite some time but when I returned I noticed that overall, the level of respect between some members was at an all-time-low and consequently the board has been nowhere near as fun as - say last year.

I think the admin staff has/have reached a point where reducing off-topic posts may serve as a "back-to-basics" digital television discussion forum, whilst allowing for a "member-helpline-off-topic" section for subjects that don't need or deserve their own thread.

-------------------------------------- BUT.....

My personal view is that a post is a post - whatever its nature - it's a contribution to the board and therefore should be treated as such. I don't believe that anyone should have post counts taken off them because of where they are situated on the board.

I also believe some members who contribute well to the board will reduce that contribution when posts are not counted - maybe not today, maybe not next week, but over time I think some people would eventually go elsewhere - which can't be a good thing for the board, no matter what their views are - or what things interest them.

As I said originally, there already is a "filter" in place ie: when someone "views new posts" the OT posts are not displayed.

So based on that, I voted "no" - not for my sake - it doesn't affect me - but for others who've spent so much of their free time on the boards.

Just my 2 cents worth :P

My only comment is that having these never ending back and forth arguments (especially on Caniffes own thread!) which are totally off topic with every member gaining another post count for each one only shows me (if I was a mod) that off topics posts shouldnt be counted. :(

and i voted NO. :angry2:

I dont think we make a good argument for ourselves like this.

Oh crap I think I ticked the wrong box

Can we start again ?

Well seeing that the poll hasn't changed for at least an hour and you joined about 15 minutes ago my guess is your vote didn't get through.

Try again B)

It wasn't hard to bear with such a well written and reasoned post PZ!

In fact, it was the sort of post that I would have expected any person who created a poll such as this one would welcome.

Your belief that there may be a desire (whether it be prompted by the thoughts and opinions of others or not) to return the Forum to a "purely DTV" based entity with some minimal Off-topic style discussions in order to reduce what could be seen by some as a degeneration of the Forum from a point that is only a few months past, has certainly made me ponder my position in relation to the DTV forum...

Sure - I joined the DTV forum because of my interests and purchases of HD TV's, HD cameras and AV peripheral devices. The DTV forum proved itself a valuable resource in those early days of 2003.

Times however have moved on. The DTV scene isn't the same as it was back then. The DTV forum moved on... Now it appears (as you suggest) the Forum's direction needs to be put into reverse!

Do you reckon there'll be a guarantee that these proposed changes will take the Forum back to the "Golden Days"; when DTV was pretty much the all consuming interest for the vast majority of members?

And what if the changes fail to do what you suggest a few key individuals believe they will?

Will swords be provided for those who got it wrong to fall upon? :o:D

Good point, I'm not entirely sure when the "Golden Days" actually happened because I'm still a relative "newbie". ;)

Being a radio-freak, it was the off-topic radio threads that attracted me and right next to them is the general OT section which is where I've been ever since.

With the intro of HD on FTA TV, sales of HD set-top-boxes have soared recently which puts DTV forum squarely into the spotlight and more and more new members are "sharing the love" and the "Golden Days" may well be ahead of us rather than behind - hence the possible desire by the admin to bring DTV forum "back to basics".

Then again, what better reason to have a healthy OT section full of fun, education, and on-line friends to share it with I say :P

OT: Not to cause mischief but I am intrigued at what Simpson's quote could cause such umbrage, surely it wasn't :

Sneed's Feed and Seed (Formerly Chuck's)

NB I'll take that down if anyone finds it offensive rather than clever :)

Peter Gillespie

Given teh amount of newbies around here, I'd say the DTV forum is more alive then ever and more relevant than ever, especially with the advent of HD and SD multichanelling and the need for people to jump onto the digital revolution.

I'd say that the OT section's majority of posts are made by a minority of numbers and would be interested to see those figures (if they can be produced)!

I feel that the OT can be split as I have mentioned before - Tech based OT where posts count and Non Tech OT where posts do not count as I have explained earlier.

I really have absolutely no idea what you are on about.

What "guidelines" are you after?

What "policy" is missing?

This poll was made by me, in response to a year's worth of querying about post counts. I up until now, haven't posted about it, and thought the climate was right to ask. Given the reaction last time a change was "forced" upon the crowd, I thought it best to open the floor as it were. A decision has not been made, and in fact my original assumption of how the decision would be reached has actually gone full circle and I've swung the other way.

So I'm really not sure what conspiracy theory you are operating on, and why you are digging far deeper than you should for such a basic matter.

Considering the importance many put on "post counts" ...If a policy is brought into place whereby posts in the OT are not included.. I would suggest that it should not be retrospective.

Also the exception should only apply to the following sections:

Suggestions, Help and Forum Announcements and General and Miscellaneous - Off-Topic

Considering digital radio is on the horizon, the post count should stay intact for the Digital Television and Radio - Off-Topic section, and this section should have a change in title to digital & analog radio.

Shes about done I think!

Stay on topic without the trash please :)

There seems to be quite the fetish with post counts by some members of these forums.. Strange.
