Off-topic Post Counts

Featured Replies

Given the fact that if you select "View New Posts" there are no 'off topic posts" shown, seems to indicate the forum owners do not consider off topic posts to be equal in merit to the majority of viewers.

Appears to me that "Suggestions, Help and Forum Announcements" and "Digital Television and Radio - Off-Topic" may also be included in the poll question:

"Should posts in off-topic forums be removed from post counts?"

And here:

Posts made in selected forums will be +0,

Yeah, that's the way I read it too. It's either DTV or Death :P

Free Mon$ter Cables (also available for purchase from your nearest White Van Distributor) for anyone who votes "No"!

As proof of your vote, just PM Your Creditcard details (Type (Visa/MC - AMEX not accepted), Name as appearing on card, card #, expirey date and security number), home address and when you'll be out home and the boys will be right around to fix you up! :winky::ninja:

Cheers,

Firstly, I would appreciate if (ironically) the off topic posts can not enter this thread. All it does is blow what should be a solid 8 page thread of good reading into a much larger wall of text.

That aside - the reasoning is irrelevant, short of attempting to put suggestions that may cause drama past you first. Given the voting in this thread, it is disappointing. On one hand you want a say, but the reality is the vast majority really don't care.

So do we as a sideline thing just decide and don't consult in future? I wonder!

I'll leave this open for a while yet.

It could be an awareness thing, from what I've seen many members didn't know about this poll.

A notice on the front page such as "visit our poll" might attract more votes....

:reads into that:

Permission to spam the forum with 'please visit this poll and vote NO if you want a Mon$ter Cable' !!??

Cheers.

Starting provocative threads... Playing games...

There's a word we commonly use to describe that sort of activity. :winky::P

:runs and hides:

I don't suppose anyone has returned serve in the second game? Or has someone PM'd you already and asked for the OT to be closed down? :ninja::(

as Jack Slater said, that would be a "big mistake."

I'm hoping that's flippant humour...

I mean; I've been trying to make serious posts about a topic which is linked to a poll which could determine some pretty serious outcomes as far as some members are concerned - and I'm just a mere member.:D

I usually only scroll down as far as "What is happening in Australia?/What is happening overseas?" and I am an active member of those forums. I only noticed or took part in this thread because the subject line made me curious enough to click on it. OT? Who cares? I can talk bollocks with my friends.

Yeah, I feel the same way about the DTV reception threads.... but I can see that they would still have some value to others.

Sure, but is that as important as the focus of the website as a whole, which is to discuss digital TV and AV?

Some people appear to think it's more important, some say it's equally important. Some say it's less important, and I assume that is also the reason why the question has been raised.

Are the egos of some in the former two categories the reason for their resistance to a change?

That's the point I was trying to make. O/T is definitely not important to many people, but the same can be said for Reception, Geographical, HiDef etc.

But at least they are related to the stated purpose of the forum ...

The purpose of the forum is not the issue, if we were to apply that principle, then 80% of all posts should be +0 because they are not about DTV or AV.

It's about creating a sense of community, and I believe that the only way that you can do that is to treat all people equally. So we either don't have any visible post counts at all, or we leave it as it is.

Ever wondered why more people don't participate in OT ?

Maybe because the welcome mat isn't exactly laid out for newcomers.

Were you after a personal invitation Andrew? :winky:

Come on dad, give these guys a break........ :winky:

I remember when you were a fun loving dragon...........

Then you became number 2 in this forum,

and you had a gender identity crisis when people use to call you carol instead of coral,

then you changed your name but i still found you

What point was i trying to make?

Firstly, that argument has nothing to do with this poll, so please stop trying to bring your old gripes into this. I've found newbies in OT are treated no differently to other parts of the forum. I can't remember an instance in OT where anyone was discriminated against because of their post count, but I can remember many instances of such things happening in other (supposedly technical) subforums.

It is the so-called technical subforums where the post count is most used to discriminate. I don't necessarily want to use the HiDef forums as an example because some people are very touchy about it, but I specifically remember many posts where there was some new member who posted pro Blu-Ray message was labelled as a troll. These instances serve to highlight to me why I think the post count should be abolished altogether, as they are a form of discrimination.

I must have missed the bollocks thread? anyone, anyone, bueller?

Thats a fair point there foggy. I remember when I joined last year that area was a war zone. Everytime I hit "add reply" I put on my helmet and flak jacket. Obviously its safer now but off topic was much friendlier. ;)
