If you're wondering kiddies - lots of bass & distortion.

Will also be used for surround sound home theatre, but my existing satellite speakers will be the rears

My home theatre area is such that I will only be 3 metres from the front speakers - therefore don't want speakers that are 'overkill'

So what fronts, centre & sub-woofer do you recommend?

Does it really matter in that case?

Take some of your distortion along to some shops and buy the ones that sound the most distorted to you :D

He was referring to the distortion of the guitars, not the amps distorting.

I think you'll need a big pair of tower speakers.

So Cody - why did you go Boston Acoustic VR3 instead of B&W 683?

I noticed in another thread you were at one stage looking at the 683

What price did you pay for the VR3?

I had a listen to lots of different speakers, including the 684s and 683s. My budget was $2k and I ended up with the Boston VR2s which are very similar to the VR3s but retail for $2k (picked them up for about $1600). The only others I would have considered in the price range are the Paradigm Monitors or Studio series. However, seeing as you can afford up to 3k checkout the Neuphonix. Apparently they're where its at, and going off the sound of my Epicentrix, they must be pretty awesome. They retail for $3200 so you should be able to pick them up for around $2700.

I think the JBL E100 would be great at playing rock, metal, dance music for about the $1200-$1500 mark, or the L890 for around the $2k will sound much better lending themselves more to Listening music, but still offer heaps of punch. The L890 will go down to 28hz as well so maybe no need for a sub, as most music wont go that low anyways.

I listened to the Krix Neuphonix, Boston VR3s and B&W 683s, and for hard rock and metal found the Neuphonix and VR3s much better than the B&W's. The Bostons are better value for money, but are a discontinued model. Go for the Krix.

I agree, the VR2/3s are great for hard rock.

Yeah apparently Boston is re-evaluating its position in the market place (considering going aiming at more entry-level gear).

VR2/3s are dirt cheap in the US these days.

G'day mate, Krix Neuphonix and Krix Epicentrix and Krix Seismix 5, and you definitely can't go wrong. Otherwise, if the budget doesn't stretch that far, Krix Phoenix, Krix Centrix and Krix Seismix 3.

I agree that the Krix Neuphonix is definitely a very good proposition for this genre of music.

another bose in the making

dont see a point in the krix series man

and they are really good speakers

im all for buying assuie gear but playing

slayer at a slightly higher volume then the voice of god

is just bad for your speakers to start with

an any metal fan worth his salt will if given the opportunity.

the sound quality aint gonna be that much better seeing

that the stereo you have was probally 30 times better

than the gear it was recorded on

you want somethin thats gonna throw big noise at ya

big drivers and big power handling an

probally an 8ohm speaker sounds better for metal i recon

but as always it always comes back to personal taste

you gaotta get out there with a few of your favorite tunes

an test drive the hell out of everything

play what ever you like as loud as you want in the shop because if you look really interested

they dont care if it looks like there gonna sell 3 or 4 grands worth of gear

i made them sit through a whole rob zombie dvd at full noise man

they were about in tears but its my money an i wanted to make sure they were what i wanted

If I did the same with Nile, they'd probably committ themselves...

I'd suggest the high efficiency high powered Klipsch towers.

Heh, phrygian sweep arpeggios to the max. I was watching some guitar tutes they did a couple of weeks back, they sure play some wacky guitars.

Seriously though, if you are listening to something like Opeth, you may want to consider expanding your requirements from distortion^23 - or are you just into full blown death metal?

CARCASS ftw!

the rf 82's from klipsch would be a good choice i recon

they where originly my first choice.
