2 years ago a friend of mine got austar in his unit, initially austar wanted to know the details of the type of unit, and when that was acceptable all he had to do was get a written statement of approval from his landlord. It was just a standard dish on the outer brick wall of his unit, not a multi-dwelling system so he gets box office, sport active etc

not normally, but if you are pc wise you may be able to do it if it hasnt been overwritten by something else which is very likely. It would involve removing the hard drive and connecting it to a pc and see if its just a standard delete flag. I cant recall anyone here actually saying they have looked at the drive with a pc, i know the foxtel IQ uses a standard fat32 file system, so hopefully the mystar does as well

No, you're just guessing and you're quite incorrect in that assumption.

The MyStar has a 160GB Seagate hard drive that has a proprietary format (many PVR manufacturer's choose to use non-PC formats since they are more optimised for their application).

If you connect the drive to a PC it will appear as an available unformatted 149GB partition.

There are specialised 3rd party applications that can extract the files in many of the proprietary formats, but it's another thing to understand and start tweaking the file table to undelete an allocation, let alone modify the custom planner database to make the file available again.

So instead of misleading the previous poster, if you accidently delete a file in the planner, or in my case the box decides to delete all your recordings one day then you've lost them for good and the only way to get them back is to wait and record them again if they are ever shown in the future.

As well as the remote shenanigans, particulary annoying when your ffwd thro a show when you press stop it decides you pressed PPV and promptly forgets where you were up to and have to FFWD thro everything youve watched :/

I have an issue now where every night presumably when it updates the guide, in the morning I have the red error light lit. When I have tried to record overnight the recording fails and says power failure error?! This is a new one as I've had the box about 5 weeks now and it has been fine up until now....

Yeah these boxes have a mind all of their own, 5 weeks and all was fine - count your blessings!

Speaking of recovering deleted recordings, I noticed something unusual the other day in the form of a recording I had deleted showing up in the recordings list again some 2 weeks after I had deleted it.

It was the very first thing that was recorded on the box when the installer was installing the box, and by the next day (or possibly even same day) I had deleted it.

Then just the other day I noticed it at the bottom of the recordings list, went into it and it played and was definitely at the exact spot where the original recording had begun.

Really bizzare, especially considering we've been recording quite a few things since the install.

I do think the recordings section could do with some improvement in the form of an option to confirm you want to delete files by default...

I know if you press blue to set the "Keep" option on the recording when you then press "Yellow" it warns you, but it would be nice to be able to have that by default, or at the very least provide an "undelete" option as it is definitely all too easy to get trigger happy on the yellow button and wipe out something you didn't mean to.

Just wondering, seeing as i'll be cancelling my Austar subscription (really glad i managed to get a 6 month contract when i joined last year), will i still have to pay the full amount for this period? As each cycle starts on the 22nd and i'll be cancelling about halfway into this current one, will i get to only pay part of it? or at least try and get them to do that.

I have had this piece of junk for a year now, after moving to Queensland from Sydney and having to move off of my beloved and well functioning Foxtel :( I never had recording faults or anything.

My list of problems with it are now endless.

The first which seems to be slightly better now is

- Not being able to select the correct transmitter.

In my area there are 2 transmitters within range, Mt Gonoonen or whatever and Ghost Hill. Basically you want Ghost hill, because the other one is flakey and never actually works. When you scan for channels it picks them up and sets it as ghost hill. You go to watch it and bang, its on to the other one. A simple menu option to choose the transmitter would solve this but noooooooo. we were until recently plagued with not being able to get free to air channels because it switched t o the wrong transmitter.

- My biggest issues and the one that has pissed me off today, is the flakey and hopeless recording and TV Guide.

I am a Manly fan and i didnt want to get up at 4am to watch Manly play Leeds in the WCC in the UK. So I set my system to record, what does it do, it records the first part of the show, flakes out and records 4 minutes of the show directly after the football.

The end result, me getting up at 5:30 with friends over to watch the game, and not being able to do so because of the cock up of the system. I had no way of avoiding hearing the scores once I got to work so now have to wait until midnight tonight to watch the game without the excitement of not knowing what is going to happen in it.

I emailed them to complain and what is their response...no apology, no admitting their software is **** as most people know. but instead an email to tell me they know its frustrating not watching it live, and it will be replayed at 10:30 pm on Win (which is incorrect anyway, it is on at midnight)

I am so annoyed because this has happened time and time again. I have missed games I have recorded, because I wasnt able to watch them live and have no faith in the systems ability to record anything.

Methinks its time to personally cram the mystar set top box down their throat, get standard Austar and rig up MythTV

I did say I didnt know what file system they use, and i did say maybe

So instead of misleading the previous poster,

where did I "mislead" them? i said I wasnt sure, and was just posting a maybe!

Now back to business, Im getting zero minute recordings again, anyone else getting these?

Here's an interesting problem. I have the FTA antenna cable going into the Mystar's RF In. Another cable comes out of the RF Out and goes into the Topfield PVR's RF In.

I had the power off to the entertainment unit while we were painting (moved stuff around). When I reconnected it all and went to watch WIN on the Toppy the picture was pixellating really badly, freezing, gaps in sound, etc. All pointed to a crap antenna connection.

Check the leads. No problems. I change channels. Prime, Ten Vic, SBS and ABC all received clearly. Change to WIN. Crap signal.

Last night I discovered, after deciding to record Underbelly on the Mystar tha when I switched to the PVR I discovered that its picture on WIN was normal. But when I switched the Mystar over to another channel the PVR lost the signal for WIN.

Obvious solution is to connect the PVR directly into the antenna outlet on the wall. I'll need a double adaptor for that. In the meantime before I get one, anyone got any clues as to why the passthrough signal would be corrupted for WIn and WIN only? There appear to be no settings in the Mystar so I assume that it's a hardwired signal path.

whaaaa! and give the subscriber some control over "AUSTAR" property. You don't know Austar do you? They are nazis when it comes to what the subscriber can or can't do.

I get that all the time when recording English soccer, you get my full sympathy, you schedule a game b4 going to bed with the idea you'll watch it at a christian hour (and its as good as live) before breakfast only to find that mystar has stuffed it up big time. Most commonly, I find there's half an hour of pre-match which I don't want, so fast forward the recording only then to find it won't stop FF and half the match or more flashes past my eyes, as good as hearing the result on the radio innit. We pay extra for Mystar yet half the time it lets ya down.

Don't tell Austar you're sharing your recordings with non-subscribers, the nazis probably have a rule disallowing that sort of thing.

They'll probably bribe you to keep it, keep the mystar for 3 months at same price as standard box, (is typical) in the hope that you'll settle down a bit, either that or they'll fluke a firmware upgrade that actually fixes faults

I got a new bug that has appeared with L66.

Sometimes a recording will appear to go ok but when u go to watch it it says ZERO minutes duration,, and is unwatchable. what is worse is if you dont delete it then when you go up or down the list of recordings, if you accidently stop on this zero minute recording then the mystupid stops responding, nothing except reset will get it going again. This happens on both my mystupids.

Yes i thought it was just me but from asking around i was suprised to find many others were having this and other problems.

Meet a Bloke the other day who has had 8 boxes all that have failed in one way or another.

It seems Austar is not taking these problems seriously.

Privately they take them very seriously, but they're clueless as to how to remedy the probs without an expensive recall or even worse have to admit to having stuffed up by not buying into Foxtels IQ. So with the usual contempt they show their customers they publicly refuse to accept there are problems. Its almost comical when you ring 'em and they say hmmm never heard of that problem before and apart from the odd call all the rest of our customers are loving the Mystar. Its quite deceitful and condescending at the same time. If it were a grocery store doing this, they'd be on ACA &/or investigated by a government department over gross misrepresentation of a consumer product.

Lets hope the HD is more reliable when its launched in 2011 and its in black to.

Not to mention their deceitfulness when they con customers into accepting a mystar when there's a problem with a standard satellite service. Typically they will be told there will be a delay in replacing their box or fixing the problem but guess what. We can let you have a wonderful mystar straight away and you will love it!

now heres a good way for austar to get rid of mystars. Start a rolling program of standard box smartcard failures. Customer gets error message, cant be resolved by technical support. Oh dear it will have to be upgraded to a mystar.

Damn, now I've probably given them the idea

This is how they got me said would be a 4 week wait but they have a tech in the area doing Mystar in 3 days time, and this would be a free upgrade/DOWNGRADE?

I was also told there may be a service fee if i had done something wrong and maybe responsible for the cost of a new box!

Anyway tech told me this is Bull the only thing wrong was a spider had climbed into the feedhorn? And he also does service calls and could have done one that day

I went with the mystar anyway.now that i think of it he did say they were not as reliable as they should be

When i phoned austar i was told less than2% of subscribers were having problems

That's not a new bug, I had the same problem with the 2 revisions before it as well.

Well I've decided to take the plunge and unsubscribe from Mystar and Austar entirely. Another $100+ in my pocket each month the problems with mystar, lack of HD and bad vision of the austar CEO have made up my mind to do without it. I have HTPC that records HD FTA and I'm never short on something to watch, I don't expect sport to be an issue either with the NFL/NBA/AFL being shown on OneHD this year.

Undoubtedly a few will be following your lead.

Aside from FTA there's also Network BT.

As for sport I just turned FS1-3 back on. I watch motorcycle racing and FS carrys the World Superbikes. While Ten has MotoGP it doesn't do it live and it has ads.

There are also the lifestyle and How To channel shows that we're hooked on. So, for the time being, at least, it's staying on.
