2. The Movie + option is greyed out so I can't turn it on, anyone know why ?

(I've tried many combinations of picture settings incase its only activated under certain conditions)

I've noticed the Movie + option is greyed out also on certain inputs. Its definitely available for FTA broadcast but don't remember it being available for HDMI input sources.

I'll check again when I get home 2nite.

I got this unit the first week it was available, how would I negotiate either a firmware upgrade or an already upgraded unit?

I'd strongly reccomend the OPPO 1080p DV-981HD upscaling DVD player for SD DVD. I have some ropey old DVD's and the quality improved substantially when the upscaling was moved away from the set. Newer stuff looks better as well. For $400 it's a damn sight cheaper than setting up an HTPC too... if you want to get your money's worth out of this set it's worth spending the bucks.

I've pretty much decided to get a PS3 for Blue Ray. I'm hoping the upscaling of the PS3 that came with update 1.80 is as good as the upscaling I could get from any dedicated upscaling DVD. There seems to be a reasonable number of people saying the PS3 does a very good job at this

Model Number: LA40MX1BDX/XSA

1. My NVIDIA Control Panel tells me the native resolution of this panel is 1280 x 720, anyone know why ?

(My display settings are set to 1920 x 1080)

Thanks

Jack

Hi Jack,

I assume your model is a typo, you meant to type 'Model Number: LA40M81BDX/XSA', right ?

I'd say its a dodgy nvidia driver/application ( so typical of nvidia recently ), as i have the earlier Samsung 1080p 40 Inch LA40F71BX, and my HTPC ( details

below ) ATI driver correctly identifies the panel via it's HDMI interface, and its native resolution as 1920x1080, max refresh rate 60 Hz.

Not sure about nvidia stuff and their support, but you might want to start a support request with them to resolve the issue, or ditch the nvidia and bring on ATI :P

My LA46M81 has the same firmware version (1004) but it doesn't support 1080p24 I don't think - tried casino royale and it showed up as 60hz :/

Think its worth letting Samsung know to come down and update the motherboard?

[sidenote: "Movie Plus" was automatically engaged (as long as it's possible) every time I changed input source, or even change resolution/ aspect ratio over the same connection, despite it being labelled clearly as "Off" in the user menu. To disable it I had to turn it on first and then turn it off.

I have fired an email off to Samsung informing them about this issue, as it could potentially be fixed with a firmware update.]

Sorry if I missed another post about this, but I seem to be suffering from this Movie Plus issue as well, did those who contact Samsung hear anything back from them?

I'm going to give them a call tomorrow. I guess i'll just ask that they update the firmware.... Is there any way someone could post the name of the updated firmware?

Wouldn't it be nice if they just posted it on their site and we could download it.......

I don't think its a firmware issue - from reading the avforum thread it seems like they need to update the board as the EDID details (the data telling the PS3 that it can't handle 24hz) is not stored in the firmware

Edit: after a quick firmware check, my firmware details are exactly the same as thongz - except mine is an SQ01 panel :/

Craaaaap. Hmm, either way - can a samsung tech do that? Or am I going to have to send the thing away?

According to some posts on the other forums, the techs can update the EDID on the spot but whether they will accept it as a fault or not is another question.

Worth a try I guess..

Hi guys, great site. ***I need some help please!!***

I have a samsung 46 inch 1080p lcd tv LA46M81BD model.

I have tried to connect my custom HTPC (which comprises of a 7900GT, abit atx motherboard, juli@ soundcard) to this awesome screen using a HQSS5551/10Metre - HDMI TO MALE19P-DVI MALE 1 (http://www.hqproducts.com/eng/products/audiovideo/hdmiconnection/page_1/artl_HQSS5551/1.5)

I am able to display resolutions up to 720p and 1080i. However, for the life of me when ever I try the 1080p option in the nvidia settings i get a 'no signal/not supported' message. Any one have any ideas? namely;

1 - im pretty sure, but my LCD TV can support 1080p input and output right? through dvi to hdmi as well?

2 - Is my cable not 1080p? the guy who sold it to me reckons it is, but is gonna double check. I know not all dvi to hdmi cables are 1080p capable

I read a few pages back in this thread that sclyde2 has almost the same setup as me (same screen I think, similar htpc) and was able according to him to get 1080p output on the screen.

Can someone give help and clarification??

thank you!

OK,

I've just installed the latest driver software for my graphics card and now the NVIDIA Control Panel recognises this panel as 1920 x 1080 native resolution.

Thanks again BigDonk.

Hi Pep Song,

Yes your panel is definately 1080P if it is the M8.

I also recall someone earlier saying he found in the NVIDIA control Panel that he had 1080I instead of 1080P set for hdtv signal.

Also try in the NVIDIA Control Panel > Change Flat Panel Scaling > Change To Native Resolution.

This should then select "Use My Displays Built In Scaling".

Also try the "Just Scan" option for picture size (I'm using that and I'm connected to input HDMI 2)

As for the cable.

Is it dual link dvi to HDMI ? (although I think even single link is still ok for 1080P)

I'm currently using a 2.4 metre cable that was made by "Pure AV" and it cost me $230 from JB Hifi.

I've ordered a 10 metre cable made by "Monster" for $799 from Harvey Norman as I'll be moving my HTPC box into another room from my panel.

I mention the prices only to say there are grades of quality although maybe I've just been sucked in by good sales-manship.

I believe these cables are good for 15 or more metres depeding on quality.

Hope I've been of some help

Good Luck

Jack

Everyone seeem to go for sports all the times.. then comes LCD 1080 HD

Does LCD 1080 has to always be mainly for sports? if only you could think of FTA and sometimes watch some dvd movies. But not a television just for sports only or for nintendo such games..

Have anyone brought a 50" LCD HD `1080 and that your not just going to use the screen to watch just sports and games. >?

I am just coming up to speed on all this stuff about refresh rates and multi sync monitors etc, in relation to the 24hz issue.

I have read in some places (http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=540299) that the m8 "can successfully be force-fed 24hz video from a PC". Does this mean I can use something like powerstrip to alter the refresh rate on the PC to 24hz and the TV will accept it? This kind of idea would be consistent with some posts here mentioning that they would like an option on their ps3 to force 24hz, which I guess would be the ps3 equivalent. Am I on the right track? I think I read elsewhere that some monitors can be damaged if a refresh rate different to what that the monitor can accept is sent to the monitor, but this might be only apply to older pc monitors (crts maybe?) for faster-than-acceptable refresh rates. I am a little hesitant to do anything that may damage my TV. Should I start playing around with powerstrip, or other equivalent software???

On the other hand, some posts on here talk about EDID, and that the TV will reject the 24hz signal. Is this correct or not??

My TV is based around a HTPC, so if the TV "can successfully be force-fed 24hz video from a PC", I am not that worried about motherboard/firmware updates, as I plan to play any DVDs (and possibly blu-ray or hd-dvds in the future) from my PC.

So can anyone clarify the above? ie. how to force-feed 24hz from the PC etc. I have an nvidia 8800gtx.

On a related issue, I also have read that many people suggest using certain upscaling DVD players when using these kind of 1080 TVs, as the scaler in some DVD players does a better job of scaling than the TV would. Obviously, when watching a DVD via a PC, the PC handles the upscaling instead. I suppose this is done by the dvd playing software (powerdvd etc). Correct? Does anyone have an idea of the relative image quality upscaled by PCs vs images upscaled in the better upscaling dvd players? I don't really plan to buy a dvd player, but would if there was an image quality benefit for dvd watching.

Neat, so once the PS3 has the force option we should be all good!

"Also try in the NVIDIA Control Panel > Change Flat Panel Scaling > Change To Native Resolution.

- I couldn't find these exact options : /. I have the latest 94.xx Nvida drivers for the 7900GT.

"Also try the "Just Scan" option for picture size (I'm using that and I'm connected to input HDMI 2)"

- Did that, no luck. left it on that setting as i try to change to 1080p from the nvidia option. Had a black screen before reverting.

"Is it dual link dvi to HDMI ? "

- No idea. though im gonna get some atlona dvi to hdmi cables that say 1080p so i can be sure.

This is killin me! I can display 720p but not 1080p  . Hey sclyde2, can you please confirm you are currently outputing 1080p to your 46 inch screen using your 8800? if so im out of ideas.... also does the 24khz issue affect me??!

help appreciated!

So happy - got my Samsung on Friday night - Not the best deal, but I got it for $3,079 with 18 months interest free + $20 for delivery and install. I got mine from Retravision in Bendigo. I am sure if you were to pay cash you could get a better deal quote easy. As far as I know they had a few more in stock too. It looks amazing in the lounge room - watching a movie last night was almost like being at the cinema. Very happy customer here!

Seriously, there's no reason to pay $800 for a Monster HDMI cable - try the cables from somewhere like htcustomcables.com or selby acoustics. both have good review sfrom forum members and cost nowhere near what you're paying. There's plenty of threads in the Home Theatre section of the forum discussing this.

Its a shame that LCD 1080 screens are mainly good only for nintendo games or sports... If thats what a screen can beform in its best HD 1080 then i would go fo Plasma, After all plasma has it all together with less complaints about it.

I personaly am not a sports fan at all and it would be pointless to own a large screen (LCD) just for sports unless your going to use it up at your local bar or whatever business you deal with for athers to watch sports everydays on a LCD just like the TAB place..

And i was going to buy a LCD 1080 screen but hearing people LCD with sports and LCD with games and very little said for FTA/foxtel viewing and from times dvd movies on a LCD 1080i/p.. So i gather information from viewers like you with very little said about it then just sports/games with it. Perhaps Plasma after all are the winners since plasmas can do more then just sports and games :)
