Thanks. Added the chart in the relevant section. I am fixing the typo's as I do revisions.

Thanks for the advice

That's why we got HD isn't it. Highest possible pic and sound quality.

I love it. I just need more movies.

Well done Mom', I just read through your 'easy to read' guide for the uninitiated into the complex world of HD.

Congratulations on an excellent effort, so ......when do you go into print ?

I know I have been harping on about Total HD discs of late, but that might be worth a mention considering Warner's are going to introduce them in the 2nd half of 2007, regardless of whether all studios are on board or not.

Once again, just what the forum needed at this time, a thumbs up.

Oh no dont ask him a question mo :D

Yep separate thread for that stuff

Oh yeah like Im thinking when I go into the store after reading this so far excellent guide that the guy behind the counter is going to know the difference between a BJ and a HJ

Very insignificant detail to be included in a shopping guide ...youre talking about Java or non Java enabled menus..right?

Who really wants to know about that..and who really cares...its unproportionate to the rest of the content I reckon.

Youve already had three wishes granted Skid...you want to rewrite the whole sticky? :P

Carry on Major

:P:P

hey **** I can have a cup of java if I choose :P

hey Mello, you may find Blu-ray will become the most "environmentally-friendly" of all the formats:

Paper based Blu-ray Disc

On April 15, 2004, Sony Corporation and Toppan Printing, a large Japanese printing company, announced the development of the first paper-based Blu-ray Disc.[7] Compared to normal Blu-ray discs it contained 51% paper, could store 25GB of data, and was developed with environmental concerns in mind as it used less raw material usage per unit of information during manufacture. Sony and Toppan said they would continue to develop the product for practical use,

For my personal taste, I think the interactivity stuff is just boring.....

I remember when I first got into DVD< how I marvelled at all the features that were available via menus. I even tried one of those interactive DVD disks - yawn..... the novelty wore off very quickly.

Now, all I want is the best movie quality possible. I would be more than happy to loose all of the 'fluff' bits on a disk, if it meant higher bit rate for audio and video.

If you want interactive stuff - get a PS3 or XBOX and play a game. if you want to watch a movie, just put in the BD or HD-DVD disk, press play and sit back and watch.

I agree with you when it comes to normal DVD but the interactive features for HD DVD & BluRay run a lot deeper - eg. it is HDi & BDj that allow for the overlay functions (eg progress bar & live menus) that we see when the newer discs are paused etc.

I cant remember the name of the movie, but there is a well documented instance where only the PS3 would play a particular title because BDj had not been implemented on any of the other players availale at that time.

Good work Momaw

Can I please suggest we explore which players have post processing chips in them when in 1080PHD mode for high def content?

I do believe reading experienced peoples opinions on subjective as well as objective visual quality metrics that good post processing chips like the HQV Terenex derivative makes a real difference. I have no first hand experience simply because I havent physically seen one yet to compare.

Excellent work Mo. Very detailed. A good draft and am sure it will be treated as a working document anyway.

I noticed the avatar change. Care to explain?

Also regarding studio support, from the article below, it appears Studio Canal in France has commenced releasing Blu-ray titles. The article states that the comedy film "Prête-moi ta main" will be released both on HD-DVD and Blu-ray formats.

great work momaw

i second the sticky motion

That has actually been recognised as a mistake by the advertising people, Studio Canal, has no current plans to release on Blu-ray as yet.

momaw, couple of corrections, U-Control, not U-Turn... Which is an example of IME. (making use of Javascript and XML)

"gotten" MUST be changed. after all, it is a made up word.

Perhaps mentioning 1080p for most of the Blu-ray players is 1080p60 (which the TV can't turn to 1080p24 unlike 1080i60 output).

Perhaps a mention of Dolby TrueHD 5.1 support, not just the min. requirement of 2 channel.

Perhaps a mention also on Blu-ray profiles, Profile 1.0, 1.1 and Live. With Profile 1.1 being compulsory from June 2007, making all others possibly obsolete.

There are also a couple of other Toshiba "clones" you may be able to track down.

You may want to make mention of Blu-ray exclusive titles on HD DVD from Japan and Spain (we get all Studio Canal titles thru Universal here)

I actually thought it was a bit odd when I read the article but then again Universal Music will be releasing the Nine Inch Nails Concert on Blu-ray ... hopefully thats not a publicist's mistake :D

Universal Music is seperate to Universal Pictures...

Bit like MGM is free to release on HD DVD if they wish, even though partially owned by Sony.

(MGM use to use Sony to distribute, but chose switch to using Fox in the latter part of last year. Would be nice if MGM decided to go format nuetral, making Fox distribute HD DVDs)

Yes Universal is a complex web. I gather from memory, Vivendi owns 20% of NBC Universal (aka Universal Studios) Vivendi owns 100% of Universal Music (Interscope label) and Studio Canal

Like you said, hopefully these distribution houses/studios will start releasing on both formats.

Gud MGM has done the rounds :D .. like a madam at a Brothel... the last I heard she was being distributed by Fox in Ausatralia .. now Sony hey

Oh cool Ive got a warm sticky gooey feeling coming from this thread now :P

Congratulations Major Mo :D

Skid I thought I told you to shut up and let the thread be as it is

Congratulations Mo; a comprehensive and well balanced guide :D The only suggestion I could make is to delete the HD in dts hd core only in reference to all the blu ray players except the panasonic [if the upgrade occurs]. The samsung;sony and pioneer all have basic dolby digital/dts decoders so any dd+/dts hd tracks are downrezed

yes good guide and fairly well balanced. I would have included:

A better explaination of the DB regions and where an australian can safely import from (ie europe). The way you have described it only adds to the uncertaincy.

In store availability may a factor to your typical consumer, so i'd suggest people see what available in stores before choosing a format

Was the size difference mentioned? i must have missed it.

Was the size difference mentioned? i must have missed it.

*** please, this is not a troll. this is an honest question ***

does it really matter ?

The studios have shown that the size difference is not the differentiator that they made it out to be.

Pirates of the Caribbean has been announced, and it will be on 2 discs, a 50Gb for the movie, and a 25Gb for the extras.

Wasn't the entire selling point of BDs higher disc capacity that they would not need to do the 2 disc release thing anymore ?

Can anyone really tell me that POTC needs to take up 50GB ?

When you look at the inflated MSRP, it becomes obvious that the studios are already back to their old trick of charging extra for the 'super duper 2 disc limited edition'.

Andrew.
