Stretching myself to try/ learn about different wines, varieties, countries and regions.

It's all about the journey and it's a fun ride.

Happy Thursday team

  • Very good cool climate wine and certainly good value compared to the Clonakilla flagship. Co-fermented with 5% Viognier. Has the classic Canberra Shiraz white pepper.

  • Had a great lunch at Oncore by Clare Smyth yesterday. Very very exe wine list, so did matching wines..  grabbed an extra glass of this Neb.   Views speak for themselves

Another one plucked out just in time, enjoying this lovely Pinot while sampling some power cables that seemingly sprinkle delicious fairy dust upon my system, win win😁

I have accumulated far too many wines that are getting a bit long in the tooth and need to be drunk; 397 of them. Most of my recent drinks are 10+years old as may have been noticed in my posts. Most are still "3 = good" or "4 = better" since I rather prefer old wine anyway, but a few are just "2 = OK". Fortunately none have been "1 = nuh" or "0 = sink".

With a bit of conditional formatting in my spreadsheet, I highlight the old ones and OK ones to give a bit of direction as to what to drink tonight.

By the time I drink the old ones, the new ones will be old, so the cycle continues.

Anyway, it's all good fun.

Time for a Friday rhymer.

The "berries et al" have gone but left with a really smooth balanced red. Nice.

I have an extremely outdated hand written list of wines and the Fridge/shelves they are situated but alas high rotation and lack of effort has left me out of touch with inventory which is something I desperately need to address when the cooler months return in the West.

It makes it more enjoyable having the ability to pre select as well.

Ha Ha, it's all in my head 🤣

Cleaning up leftovers and what I believe is the new style Barossa/ Eden (Flaxman) Valley Shiraz.

Another near casualty, @aechmea this is a 3 from me using your scale😁.

Caught it just in time.

Oops! We accidentally opened and finished this one while cooking and eating zucchini fries over an hour or so (the air-fryer ain't that big). Totally scrumptious and I should have picked better glasses (and I should have decanted it and let it rest).

Another one from mum's collection. This has all the grape flavour of the best Shiraz I've had, with a little too much tannin for perfection - indicating another 10 years would have improved it further. But, as I'm retiring on Thursday, I believe life is too short to age the wine myself. If I can buy it older, then so be it. Otherwise I'll be drinking it a bit early so as I don't end up having to leave it because I can no longer drink alcohol (my worst nightmare!). This happened to both my mum and dad and I'm vowing it won't be happening to me.

Had this with stuffed zucchini (spiced meat and rice) and will be finishing it with some zucchini soup tomorrow (guess what's been out of control in the veggie garden this Autumn?)

I sought this out years ago after reading positive recommendations. It has taken me too long to try, but I can say that this is up there with the best Aus SSB I’ve tried.

It’s not a blend I pay too much heed to, other than having the odd bottle on hand for visitors, or something to splash in for a bit of seafood cooking. It does however come up as a go to in many homes and is very popular at BBQs and gatherings.. I am a regular Sorrenberg purchaser and find their SBS to be an outstanding wine and a benchmark for this blend, now I have another one added to the list.

Limited bottling but if you are in MR and looking for something outside of the Chardonnay “purple circle”, this is worthy of consideration, this has aged beautifully .IMG_3818.jpeg
