Blybo - that is a lot in 2.5 weeks.  If you keep that off next week you have done well.If you shed more weight, well outstanding.

Just make sure you are maintaining your muscle mass with exercise, and be particularly happy if the belt is moving a notch or so.

another 600gr gone in the last 2 days, 5.6 in total. I must admit the last 2 days I've been pretty tired at night (due to lack of carbs of an evening) but I've also emptied, sorted and dispatched a container load of product, almost single-handedly this week, so a lot more active at work than usual.

I was going to do a quick 1 hour ride in the morning before my wife goes to work, if this weather keeps up I might have to sit on the indoor trainer instead.

keep up the fluids.

If you are doing some exercise, then have some fuel (simple carbs).  If not, the body will convert muscle into useable energy, which isn't a good thing.

Also, if you are feeling tired and can't think right, you may be getting low on fuel.  The brain needs some simple carbohydrate to properly process information.

Don't go 'no-carbs' and think that you can exercise and that you can do brain-intensive work.

By the way, I said 'some' simple carbs, not lots.

Drinking at least 4x 700ml "bidons" of water a day.

I still get carbs at breakfast and lunch most days but mix it up depending on how my week looks and if we want carbs at dinner time for some reason. Today I'm forgoing lunchtime carbs as I'm largely desk bound today and I pinched a few fried chips from my kids at a food court last night and going to have a couple of beers tonight. Also allowed 2 scoops of low fat ice cream each night or low fat yoghurt + a piece of fruit. I'm not usually a desert type of guy unless at a restaurant so that little extra after dinner has helped. Also not being totally sugar free makes it easy, I've had an orange today and a big salad with chicken, still have a small tub of yoghurt to go and a small container of mixed vege sticks, carrot, celery, capsicum.

It's been a lot easier than I ever imagined, and yes I do up carbs if planning a ride longer than 1 hour, and also use a 4:1 carb/protein energy powder in my bidons when riding over 1 hour. If you exercise easily enough (Base in cycling terms) you actually use fat stores for energy, not muscle.

She's lost 2kgs as well so win win, not that she needed to lose much, but nice to share the journey.

I'm sure the loss rate will slow down in the next week or 2 and then average out 500g-1kg a week.

We aren't really using the recipes. Just maintaining the food group portion allowances. We have done a couple of casseroles which were nice, but as warm weather is coming if cranked up the BBQ and we are having a roughly 200g piece of meat each night with salad or veg. We also aren't having the "indulgences" each night and often not having desert either. This allows a couple of drinks on the weekend and also extra "fuel" for bike rides

its one of the problem I saw with the program was following recipes... since we have our own... good you found a way around just using as guidance.

I had my 4 week follow up with the doc.

we never checked weight or anything. he was more keen to check over my record of what i have been eating...

his thoughts are about 80% of weight loss is what you eat 20% from exercise. the thinking here is it takes massive effort to burn off but can be countered many times over by what you eat !

got some great guidance from him looking at what I eat on portions and what to leave in and what I need to include... some foods that I need to literally just cut out leave out... pretty much

essentially came up with a list of what I can eat what to avoid and what to cut back what can substitute...

even just one day of following his guidance and I feel so good by end of the day !

exercise I havent gone through the roof in the last 4 weeks... just gym here and there, a bike ride a run.

he suggests some more walks and floor exercises... which is good and can include.

while I havent lost a lot of weight in the last 4 weeks. I'm just a lot more taught... and interestingly my blood pressure has dropped...

be the next 4 weeks that will be interesting for me :)

I see the doc again in 3 weeks !

  • 2 weeks later...

well surprise surprise.... I've been loosing a kg a week since seeing the doc a couple of weeks back :D

I've been a lot more disciplined in my eating...ie what I eat and quantities . wow I saw 94 on the scales last couple of days !

Food and diet sure plays a massive part !

feeling slimmer and more taut too, but still long way to go.

exercise wise I'm still not really going very extreme or anything. I've been to the gym couple days a week. a jog a week and a bike ride (though really to teach my daughter to ride... so been quite stop and go and slow)

one thing have discovered though is an outdoor gym in our bike rides...daughter is quite amused with me using the gear and joining in too hehe been fun. We'll go tomorrow again I think with this lovely weather.

today went for longest jog been on in ages. 5.5km and quickest in ages averaged under 8min/km and even saw a few 6s along the way ! that is a great sign of improving fitness !

see the doc again week after next, taking along my eating diary. he says he will have some more to help me and will be having another weigh in so be interesting how that goes.

Well done. I'm doing roughly the same weight wise. Also seeing 94 now. Have a family dinner tonight, guess what my morbidly obese brother in law decided to cook knowing the diet I'm on???

tomorrow is always another day 1 :D

Out for breakfast this morning. At least that's an easy one to limit carbs

Risotto is fine - just don't have a big plate.

Good to hear Al, I think riding with your daughter is a good idea.  You don't need to go really fast and long, just go.

Well I put on 1.3 kg week before last. Had a family gathering feast and then a decent ride the day before weigh in. I always weigh more for a day or 2 after a decent ride (bodies recovery mechanism I'm told). Then lost 0.9 last week but still 0.5kg above the lowest weight I've seen. No worries, pretty happy with that considering 2 fathers day functions.

Tonight will be 200grams (roughly) with the rest of the plate being steamed veg... and gravy;)

We go on holidays next week sharing a house with another family. Thankfully one of them is also now on the same diet, so apart from restaurants, we should be able to stay strictly on the concept of the diet, even though we are not following the recipies. As we are going to a coastal Qld town, I'm hoping we can eat more fish than usual, even at restaurants and still lose weight. Lot's of beach walking should help too.

wish you strength blybo  !

if any consolation i probably put on 1kg over the weekend !  :D

this was for fathers day lunch !

followed by these !

and feel a bit run down today so left off with any exercise. travelling tomorrow long day to adelaide and back ! so wednesday back on the routine !

  • Author

Routine is key isn't it. Avoid the Qantas food if you can, usually high sugar or high fat.

I'm hoping the holiday doesn't muck things up, but I'm not going to deprive myself if something special is on offer food wise. I'm sure we will be more active than my normal work day is. I wanted to take the bike, but SWMBO said no

I had a big fry for breakfast yesterday. Eggs, sausages, bacon, garlic mushrooms, spinach all on 2 small pieces of sour dough.

Skipped lunch because of it :thumb:

we had a fathers day brekkie as well, and late lunch/dinner... why I think am headed for a kg coming back on :D

breakfast was a boiled egg and toast, and lunch steamed veggies and can of tuna.... hehe

we are not eating as much fish as we need. doc tells me 4 times a week. not sure how to do that .... apart from cans of tuna !

  • Author

Yeah, fish is a tough one, we have marinated salmon (soy and a little honey) every Tuesday and I have a couple of (tinned) tuna salads through the week. I'm hoping Flathead tails come down in price over summer. @$50/kg it's hard to justify as a family meal.

@blybo

If you were a bit closer you could have these for free(well a six pack if you insist).

Heading off in the morning again so put your order in early Neil

Tommy Ruff, Leatherjacket, Mullet are cheaper alternatives than the top shelf fish and very good

still trying to figure out a good fish for curries and grilling ... i.e. a fish that doesnt fall apart...our fish choices are pretty limited even though we live by the sea shore....as silly as it sounds !

Recommendation from Sydney fish market.
Ling, Blue-eye Trevalla, Coral Trout, Emperors and Mahi Mahi are just some fish with firm, white flesh. Firm, white-fleshed fish are a popular choice for many recipes as their flavour isn’t as distinctive as pink or red-fleshed fish, like Salmon and Tuna, and their firm texture means they hold together well in all sorts of preparations. With so many species of fish in the ocean, many can be substituted for one another, which is good news for the cook. If a recipe calls for a particular species which is unavailable, or too expensive, on the day you’re shopping, tell your fishmonger how you plan to cook it and ask them to suggest a suitable substitute.

@:) al The secret is to make the curry and drop the fish chunks in at the last possible moment Al. All your small fish are no good for curries.(Whiting/Bream/Flatties ect. They'll go tough on you really quick especially Flatties. curries should be the natural home of the chaeper stronger  flavoured fish.

I hope you never ever waste a supreme table fish like a Coral Trout in a curry as that would be pure sacrilege.

The humble Victorian 'Flake' is as good as any, Ling is one of the cheaper fillets and so should your dolphin fish(Mahi Mahi) also Mackeral(Spotted and Spanish or Barred(same fish) ) . These are all dry flesh fish(relatively compared to say your reef fish like Coral Trout ect) and the later are pelagic and anaerobic so both slightly oily and choc a bloc full of the good fatty oils and acids. They absorb more of the curry flavourings  too and will keep their shape if  you leave it till the last minute to cook them in the curry.

@blybo If you can go bike riding then you have the time to go fishing. Brighton, Sandringham and Beaumaris are good places to get free Flathead;) Frankston also.

@luc. If I replace exercise with fishing then I'm in a world of hurt. It's been a LONG time since I wet a line. Was cleaning out the garage last year and had to throw out my Shimano overhead "bait caster ", the magnetic brake had sieved up thru neglect. Had it since I was 15
