Is dairy bad for you?

Featured Replies

I love milk but can't digest plain milk. But lactose free milk is fine. And I like plain yoghurt too. Try to avoid ice cream due to the excessive sugar. Some people seem adamant dairy is for calves and no good for adult human. So is dairy bad for me (and you)?

Cows milk is for baby cows, I avoid dairy That being said, how good is blue cheese

  • Could be something in that. Thats why I don't eat grass.

Not sure, I do know I consume too much even if it isn't bad for you :)

I can drink 2L of ice coffee in a day and of an evening eat 1L or 2L of creamy vanilla ice cream

A alternate friend once said that milk promotes infections in the body, not sure if true or not , but logic suggests to me that there could be something in this.

sorry, just adding some milk to my coffee ....will get back to you :D

Don't see much of dairy in Asian diets......only good for infants they say I am led to believe.

What about pigs milk, or dogs milk?

Would you put human milk on your cornflakes?

Could be something in that.

I should clarify, I avoid dairy because when I have too much my farts would contravene the Geneva Convention

Most Asians are lactose intolerant.  Something to do with genetics about 7000 years ago when most Europeans somehow became lactose tolerant.

Simple answer, no. As with all things though, moderation is the key. Also, dairy isn't the issue with some of the above examples - the sugar in both iced coffee and icecream is of a much greater concern to your health than the actual dairy component of those items.

Having milk with your cereal in the morning? A-OK

Having a glass of milk in the morning? A-OK

Having a tub of plain/natural yoghurt during the day? A-OK

Eating 1L of icecream a day? Nope, that's about 110% of your daily sugar intake, 80% of your daily saturated fat intake and around 40% of your daily energy needs.

Unless of course you're lactose intolerant, in which case, you have to be much more careful about what dairy products you consume.

Depends on the individual.

Some can digest it better than others, like wheat.

You dont need to drink it as their is plenty of foods that have similar nutrients. Calcium in our diet is very important.

My wife cant digest any dairy products, she is intolerant to dairy proteins. My daughter can only drink a2 milk.

If it doesn't upset your tummy, then a couple of glasses a day will not hurt you.

Its important to have a good balanced diet with lots of veggies a few minor indulgences wont hurt.

When did "dairy produce" become just "dairy"?  For some inexplicable reason, this really irks me.  The first time I heard it was in a TV ad of maybe 10 or 20 years ago and it just sounded weird.  When will all bread products become "bakery" or meat products become "butcher" or "abbatoir"?

My young boy had a contact allergy to dairy as a baby. Learnt a bit because of that. Let's see if my memory serves me correctly. The human digestive system is not very well designed to break down dairy products due to the fat in it. Fat chains in cows milk are longer than goats milk so harder to digest. Due to this it's better to start a baby on goats milk formula rather than the usual cows milk variety. Not sure how this works for others with a milk fat allergy for other dairy products but unfortunately for my young fella goats milk wasn't an option either.

As for me, I love the liquid white gold in all its forms.

But if everything else fails, then you have the backup forum "Beer; proof that God loves us".

Would hate to see you go thirsty.  :hiccup

If available at woolies and taste good why not

I could live without drinking milk but I love my cheese.

I like putting Soy Drink/Milk on my breakfast cereal so there are viable alternatives to milk.

talks well of intolerance…what overcame it for humans past childhood.

and apart from an intolerance really its like any other food….and of course like anything in excees

ps flavoured and added sugar milk … i.e. flavoured milk is an ultimate energy hit…to the point… many peoples bodies will struggle to cope with such a huge intake of protein, fat sugar in the one hit. so actually worse than coke for that reason.

alcohol is a lot worse drink though. alcohol is like a toxic hit to the body….so flavoured milk no where as worse as that.

Do you get why we shouldn't 'eat' what's for 'baby cows' ?

I like to eat baby cows...and grown up ones. I also like to eat unfertilised chicken eggs...ewww

and when did 'coleslaw' become 'slaw'?

There seems to be a current fad to shorten the names of everything. I have no idea why that should be.

No enlighten me

I have skimmed milk on my weet-bix every morning. Can't stand full cream milk though. Don't have any dietary intolerance, just don't like it.

I do like cheese, although most of it is rather high in salt.

I gave up the habit of  drinking F.U. iced coffee a number of years ago because of the high sugar content. These days I find it undrinkable for that very reason.

No enlighten me

Eating 'grass' !

What's not to 'get' about that?
