  1. Hi all, I’m hoping this is the right place to post this thread. My partner and I are looking for a new entertainment unit to hold a turntable, integrated amp and CD Transport, Blu-Ray player and a PS4. We’d like all of the devices to be inside the cabinet so they can be hidden away when not in use. Is there anyone in Perth who knows of any cabinet makers that make custom made furniture. I know of living edge and rough furniture but I’m not sure if there are others out there worth contacting. We’d like to have at least three separate spaces to store the audio/video equipment. For the middle section we’d like to store a turntable and would like this section to have a lid so we can open when using the turntable. In the other two sections, one would contain an integrated amplifier and a CD transport unit, and the other one would house the Blu-Ray player and PS4. Here’s a sketch of what we’re looking for. I’ll be trawling this thread for inspiration, but feel free to share your setup if you have something similar to what we’re looking for. Many thanks .
  2. Hello all, I'm looking for someone in Sydney who might be able to replicate this or something similar: http://www.dagogo.com/View-Article.asp?hArticle=803 Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Glen.
  3. Howdy all! I recently purchased some bookshelf Paradigm Studio 20 speakers for my home theatre setup, to replace some much cheaper floor-standers. So naturally, I started thinking about investing into some stands. Looking into Paradigms "Suggested" stands (a.k.a. the J29 stands) I asked around and they wanted almost as much for the stands as I paid for the speakers. Even online they often breached th $700/pair mark.. something I balked at paying. I needed two pairs. So off I went into the local hi-fi store, and I asked them how much some suitably high stands would cost... and for the cheesiest stands I've seen in a while, they wanted $220. This was not dampened tubing with a sturdy base, these were anything but stable, and just plain ugly. Enter the DIY demon. It's amazing how many times the uneducated masses (myself included) don't understand the complexity of what others do, or perhaps the others are so talented that they make it seem easy. I, like many others thought "Pfff, I can do that!"... and started to research what makes a "good" speaker stand. Now there's a lot of conflicting information about what makes a good speaker stand. Some say "It has to vibrate a bit" other say "It should be sonically damped (not dampened, that's making things wet) from the floor and speakers. Honestly, I think speakers sound pretty good if they're on a solid surface with those little rubber feet. So I decided that if I were going to make these stands, I'll make them to last and visited the local hardware store for some timber. In this day and age, there is a surprising lack of thick timber that isn't treated with some sort of liquified unhealthiness-to-termites and humans. Go beyond 50mm thick and it's all treated. Couple that with the price tag of commercial grade timber, and you're up for $100-$120 per stand just in timber. That was too expensive.. so I needed a sit with a good cup of tea to gather my thoughts. In about an hour, I'd decided that I wanted it to be height adjustable, and be ready to handle any speaker load I choose to put on it, and drawn up some rough sketches of what I wanted (I've attached them if you're interested). I couldn't just go to the timber yard and pick up giant slabs of wood, I have a sedan with no folding seats or tow bar, and there's no way it'd fit 2.4m of timber in any dimension anyway. So it had to be delivered, and cheap... So I dialled up the local landscaping supply depot and got them to ship six iron bark sleepers to me. To call these roughly cut would be a vast understatement. However, where else can you get ironbark in 75x200x2400mm slabs for less than the thinner, treated pine? At roughly $30 a sleeper, delivered, things got a whole bunch easier for people like me who ride their bike to work. Ok, so I've just moved out of a share house environment, and I'm suddenly living alone.. so I have a lot more space. When I moved, I had a hack saw, a block of wood, some sandpaper, and a hammer. Not exactly suited for working with giant, rough, slabs of wood. This is where I went a bit crazy. 1x Compound, Sliding Mitre Saw with large blade. Check! 1x Bench Drill with laser crosshair for accurate drilling. Check! 1x High powered electric planer. Check! 1x Biggest belt sander I could find with varying grades of belts, check! 6x packs of the strongest Araldite I could find, Check! 1x 22" drill bit 2x 1m lengths of bolt thread 2x 600mm clamps a large carpenter's square a tape measure many nuts many washers a "dowel joint" kit a bag of 100 dowels. a decent socket set... Eye protection, dust masks, and ear plugs. Yes, I could have bought the J29s for all of this.. but it just wouldn't be manly enough.. or something. :~) The first problem I had was that.. I've never used any of these power tools (other than the bench drill) before. It took me quite a while to decipher the quasi-english about how to unlock, and manoeuvre the mitre saw. That alone actually took longer than the time I spent to assemble the bench drill, stand, plate, and all from the pretty pictures. I've learned a LOT about tools from reading the manuals, but I've learned more from using them. Wow can a good mitre saw cut fast and so smoothly! Why didn't I get one before! They're awesome! Back to the stands... I've probably spent 8-12 hours on building the first pair so far. I've sliced up the parts for the stem and head. I haven't decided on the design for the base yet. But I'm thinking the feet of the stands are going to be 75mm (H) x 400mm (D) x 300mm (W) at my most recent revision. The mitre saw is fantastic, but the real work is in the sanding. These were, roughly cut sleepers, and they're stained, some have holes, and others vary as much as 8mm in thickness in places. I would run it through a "Thicknesser" device, but the only people I know who own one is away, and I can't move a load of wood on my own.... so I've been sanding like there's no tomorrow. I spend about 30-40 minutes sanding each face of each part.... I'm up to 80 grit, and it's looking quite nice. The first "top shelf" has been glued together, the second one will be done soon, and then all I have to do is cut and sand a few more pieces here and there. When I'm done, each stand will weigh roughly 40-50Kg (without speaker), will be 700mm at it's lowest setting and should be able to be raised 200-300mm. I'll keep you posted, as I go. All the best! Hamish.
