For Sale: ADAM Pencil Mk.3 Active speaker system - mint/as new

Featured Replies

Item: ADAM Pencil Mk.3 3 way Active Loudspeakers

Location: Bridgewater, Adelaide Hills

Price: $3,750 – bargain at half of RRP

Item Condition: Perfect / as new ex. Demo.

Reason for selling: moving to Scotland

Payment Method: Pickup - Cash

Extra Info: less than 2years old and virtually new with only a handful of hours of use

The Pencil is a 3 way Active floorstanding system running 2 x 7-1/2" Eton Hexacone Bass drivers and an X-ART tweeter identical to that used in their bigger brothers in the Tensor range. Amplification provides 200w RMS each for the lower and upper Bass drivers and 50w RMS for the tweeter and incorporates EQ for tailoring the sound to taste and room conditions. Finished in Glossy Piano Black these speakers are immaculate and as new. Original boxes included so l can ship anywhere in Australia at your cost.

At $3,750 these are available at half RRP, when you consider amplification is included you are not going to get better sound for the cost of these.

These will be available for audition for ~ 3 months

Cheers,

Mondie

Beautiful speakers! Not many reviews I could find on these... Only English review is of the passive version. I haven't had any experiences with active speakers, however can see the logic behind this approach. Can you give any indication how it might perform against similarly spec'ed/priced well known/well reviewed passive speakers eg. Dynaudio Focus260/B&W 805D/Paradigm signature6.

I'll be pairing it with a Seaton Submersive sub, fed by Emotiva pre and audio-gd DAC. Would this be an ok setup?

Hi Supa,

No not many reviews around on any of the ADAM speakers, the Tensor range seems to get most of the ADAM press. I really couldn't comment with any authority on how they would compare to the speakers you have listed, while l know those brands l haven't heard models from any of those manufacturers for years. Are those speakers similar in RRP or the asking price and is that taking into account the amp cost vs. these being an active system?

Cheers,

mondie

Hi Mondie,

I'm by no means an audiophile, yet... For the time being satisfied to some degree with an entry level passive setup based around aging B&W 603S2 and equally old Pioneer receiver. So I think anything will be a vast improvement on what I have. But I'm torn between possible upgrade paths. There are endless positive reviews on any of the passive speakers I listed, and seems to be what the crowd gravitates to, however there are also experienced audiophiles (like yourself) who swears by benefits of the active system (I've been following the passive vs active thread).

The way I see it is that actives have the benefit of having amp specifically matched to the driver to produce a designed sound signature which will alleviate me of the difficult and possibly costly exercise (as a beginner) to do for a passive system. But down side being I'll be more limited on options to fine tune sound to my personal liking.

The question in my mind is, will I be taking a risk going down a path less travelled, with the ADAM also possibly being a less expensive path.

Could u share your journey into actives (assuming u started with passives first) and your personal opinion on how the Pencil system performs. I know sound is very subjective, but experience imparts some objectivity which i'm very keen to hear being a novice myself.

Sorry about the long winded reply and a tonne of questions...

Thanks

Supa

I heard the Pencils at Mondies a while ago and I was extremely impressed with them. They had a big open soundstage and were very detailed. When I shut my eyes the music just filled the room.

For the RRP they were great value for the money already. For the price Mondie is asking they are an absolute deadset bargain IMHO. Had I not got a room full of hifi already, in all honesty, I would seriously be considering buying these.

Going active takes the hard work out matching your amps to your speakers. For the money you are getting superbly matched amps and speakers all in one package. With these Pencils, the better source (pre amp and CD) the better they will sound.

Hope that helps. If you bought these, I can't imagine you wanting or needing to upgrade for quite a while. They are that good.

cheers

I'll give this a bump as I want someone to buy these and post a review :)

They look lovely

So do l damocles. These are a bargain,, l suspect l could get more for them in Scotland where the RRP is quite a bit higher than in Oz. Dont know what other speaker and amp you could buy for the money with the sound and WAF of these.
