Great Buys On Ebay, Gumtree, Marketplace etc.
boffin replied to Drizt's topic in Great Deals, Bargains, Specials Alerts
Belt tightening should theoretically make good quality second hand gear MORE popular. No you guys have it wrong. It's simply the rising Aussie dollar and the direct importing from OS internet retailers of NEW goods which has seen the costs of NEW product plummet. This has forced the price of second hand goods down. As an example, lets take someone is looking to buy a new 7.1 home receiver. Previously say 5 years back, something decent, new would have cost in the 2.5-3K range. Now it is in the 1.5-2K range. Maybe even lower. And often the new product has all the bells and whistles. And 3 year warranty. So it is no different to the auto industry. As the cost of the new product has fallen, so has the depreciation of the equivalent second hand product escalated.... -
Well I'll be darned. I have received an offer. Looks like from a pro hifi "trader" As a matter of interest what do you all think this receiver is worth? No HDMI. No Blu Ray support. No Audessy. No USB. No Ipod doc. No streaming, No ethernet. But sounds superb.... It's a funny 'ol world, this "ipod" decade...

EXPIRED: Eoi - Denon 4311
boffin replied to matt9999's topic in Stereo, Home Cinema, Headphones Components
Hi Matt. Wow, some nice speakers you've got there... My thoughts would be to check their sensitivities.... US Speakers are much different to British ones and maybe you are used to the British sound. ? My other suggestion is to forget about all the technology/processing/Audessy crap. And just plug in a CD (for stereo) or (SACD for surround) and play in direct mode all analog out, with NO processing. The Denon should do this. Alter the volumes of the speakers manually, See how it sounds with music that way. If it still sounds crap, then ditch it. I'd basically "give" you an old fashioned surround amp with real grunt and without all the "wizardry" to try and see if it is really the Denon that is your problem (my old NAD 773 I have on ebay), but alas I live in Melbourne... Seriously I think with that budget of speakers, you should consider the top of the range Arcam. That's what I'd do if you could push your budget a couple more grand.. Also the "cat's" previous post on HT bypass and a second amp for stereo is a good one. That's what I'm doing... As for FLAC, A simple streamer box like Sonos plugged into the digital inputs works a treat. Or if they are 24 bit files look at a LinnDS To do all this in an "all in one solution", keep the Denon, then get a a Linn Majik DSi for stereo. All in one pre/poweramp/FLAC streamer/ with HT bypass. I have one and it is superb.... Linn Dealers will let you "try" before you buy... Cheers -

As a matter of interest why didn't you upgrade to the new SR7005, rather than go with the Denon? -

Drat. I agree... this IS a bargain and he would be foolish not to snap it up Don't suppose you know whether this is a feature of ALL Marantz receivers? The new SR7005 for example. I won't buy a receiver WITHOUT 7.1 analog "pass thru".. -
NAD 7.1 Surround Receiver. 110W pure into every channel. Reason for Sale. I want to upgrade. (who doesn't these days) Make me an offer, so I can make someone else on this forum another offer PM me if you like. Or bid: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NAD-773-Surround-So...3#ht_500wt_1156 Or your welcome to tell me openly on the thread that I'm "Dreaming"

Nice one. Does it have true analog audio pass thru on those 7.1 inputs? Is it still for sale? -
Hi Ray. I love your gear. As an avid SACD and DVD-A user I know the quality of this receiver /poweramp combo. The fact that you can pass all 7.1 analog channels through to the poweramps without all the digital "hocus pocus" is vey attractive to me. This is beautiful gear Ray! But I'm sorry to have to question your pricing. Demo's of the pre-amp with full warranty can be picked up for around $2.3K and the 1565 brand new for $1.5K I'm afraid the value of gear with only 4x 1.3 HDMI (and only one "out" at that), no ethernet connectivity for firmware upgrades, no audessy, and no network or dlna capabilities has plummeted in the last 12 months since you bought your gear. Whilst I appreciate you can bypass this problem by upgrading to a network streaming blu ray and use 7.1 analog out, these too can be got hold of brand new for under 1K. How do I know all this? Because I too am in the market to upgrade my gear and have suffered this savage depreciation of my current 7.1 NAD surround receiver... As for it's replacement: the 775, which is very comparable sonic wise and feature wise to your combo... well I can pick up a brand new one with a 3 year warranty for under 2K. And get the extra 2 channels for blu ray 7.1 Please Ray, don't take offence. I understand great gear like Rotel. And I'd love to own this combo. But I'm afraid the price is unrealistic. PM if you want to... Cheers Alex

Ps Audio Perfectwave Dac & Bridge
boffin replied to BladeRnR's topic in General Hi-Fi & Beginners Discussion
+1. 100% Agree. 9 Sonos Zones and still adding There is only one problem. It's stuck on crappy low res quality. It wont play high res files and is limited to 16bit/44. The Cullen Circuits modded ZP slots in a board that upsamples..which adds it's own issues. So if you want a streamer that plays 24bit/96. or even 24/192 downloads, Sonos just won't do it. That's were the PS Audio and Linn come in. It's just a pitty that the PS bridge doesn't integrate 100% nicely with Sono's wireless mesh the same way as it does with Linn. Oh well. Until Sonos releases a 24/96 player, we can't ask for everything I guess -
Hdi Dune Prime 3.0 Blu-ray Media Player

Try giving the your Dune and your video server both a static IP. things were much more stable for me when I did that.... -

boffin replied to basque1503560748's topic in Media Servers & Source Units
Another one of the problems I'm having with the Dune is mounting SMB shares. The dune seems to be doing this automatically, which is fine, until you have network problems, or the Dune hangs on streaming some file from my server and I lose the share because of a cold reboot. I'm used to the rescan button on my beyonwiz, but the dune doesn't seem to have this function. Am I missing something? -

Thanks for the tip. Once the applications folders are "removed" from the home screen, that seems to make them unaccessible. Correct? -

boffin replied to basque1503560748's topic in Media Servers & Source Units
Yeh if they get this TV issue sorted, I see no reason why collecting Dune's can't become just as addictive. As a matter of interest..is there any way to clear all the unwanted clutter off the home screen. I've found a way to bring my "Movie" folder to the home screen. But can you get rid of the other icons? If not, can the icon names be changed? -
Hdi Dune Prime 3.0 Blu-ray Media Player
boffin replied to basque1503560748's topic in Media Servers & Source Units
Ok Thanks for the link pjc. "The Codec is there (just AC3 after all) but possibly the firmware isn't selecting the correct audio stream??? Good idea to send HDI a sample." This may well be the problem! The key issue now seems whether the Aussie supplier has followed up your informative suggestion. -

boffin replied to basque1503560748's topic in Media Servers & Source Units
Ok. Yes this is the very information I am interested in. Thanks for the help! I have no problems streaming the FTA HD channel recordings made by eyetv running on a mac either. Except a lot play on the Dune without audio at all. Initially I thought this was an eyetv encoding, or network streaming problem. Then I discovered that the same problem was occuring playing a lot of HDTV streams straight off the Dune USB tuner. This takes the network and eyetv out of the equation and firmly puts the problem at the Dunes HDTV codec handling. I'm using bitstream audio settings BTW... You are a fantastic source to try and solve my problems, because you have a similar setup. I'm also running the Dune via HDMI into an Integra DTR (50.1) I know handshake and other issues with the integra aren't the problem either, because the same happens plugging HDMI into my TV. So all is pointing at the way Dune handles the AussieTV audio codecs...comments?? BTW I also run Sonos (9 zones) AND beyonwiz  -
Hdi Dune Prime 3.0 Blu-ray Media Player
boffin replied to basque1503560748's topic in Media Servers & Source Units
Thanks for the reply. I don't want a refund. The player is great. I Just want to know accurate information about what/when highdef digital audio streams from the FTA channels are likely to be supported properly. I can wait for this. No problem. I've no intention of using the Dune as a PVR. Or as a STB. I just wish to stream recordings from another source. It will stop me wasting money on another Apple HTPC We are all different in how we intend to use this great player Nobody should assume everyone is coming at this player from a Windows perspective. It has a great fit within the OSX enviroment as well. I can always record in Standard def until they sort this...but accurate information from the supplier on when this high def TV audio problem will be fixed would be appreciated -

A couple of posts back, the guy from the Aussie Dune distributor confirmed that there was a problem with audio playback of Australian FTA HD TV signals. A codec issue: I quote: - "HD channels: Video works, audio does not. I will need to contact HDI, provide them with a sample australian HD transmission to support the codec. - There is a manual recording option while watching live tv. it works perfectly, no stuttering. There isn't a menu yet to schedule a recording manually. - No stability issues. No freezing etc." Has this problem been sorted? That was 4 months ago! Who cares about anything else: recording/menu/absence of stuttering etc, if the audio playback is inconsistent (and I mean NON existent most of the time) .....I'd like to know what is going on here, 'cause it is causing me a headache... -
Telstra Announces Their New Pvr Going On Trial
boffin replied to petef's topic in Media Servers & Source Units
I think this is SPOT on. Why else would they allow Foxtel to sign with Microsoft (content on the Xbox) to gain cheap Foxtel subscribers, when they new their TBox was coming out? IMHO this device will not sell to Telstra broadband customers with Foxtel, until these two (basically the ONE!) company sort out this nonsense, or Foxtel announces just what they will be doing to upgrade their IQ's with IPTV.....it's a good example of the dog's breakfast that is developing in the delivery of IPTV in this country...bloody shambles Actually I think it's the one area of the internet that should have more regulation. The only one. Every IP content video stream should be available on every (capable) STB. I'm not saying for "free"...but potentially "available". What difference should it make to the broadcasters (Telstra/Foxtel, FTA,anybody else etc) WHAT box the customer is using...as long as they can charge for the content ...either through advertising or subscription. The government should at least make a start with it's own National broadcaster....ABC iView is OUR (taxpayer's) bloody content...what gives the ABC the right to sign what appears to be exclusive deals restricting it to one STB device? .....If normal TV had actually started out this way...(buying an individual make of television for each channel).....would the Government of the day allowed that? !!.. -
Telstra Announces Their New Pvr Going On Trial
boffin replied to petef's topic in Media Servers & Source Units
I'm afraid I don't see it that way. I'm not arguing IPTV is not the future. It is! But we have the FTA networks signing different deals with their own hardware/IP's. We have Telstra doing the same. We have the gov(abciview) signing with Sony. Foxtel with Microsoft. The individual TV manufacturers allowing only some specific streams.....instead of everything( like the digital TV signal) available on all devices. It might be how varoius companies get their 'product' out there...but it seems a grab at all costs approach with no concept of the end viewer experience. Do they seriously expect us to flip between a Tbox/playstation/fetchbox/xbox, then maybe search the TV GUI to find a catchup service, then perhaps switch inputs to our WDLive, AppleTV or HTPC (because we can't yet stream our own video content)...I mean this would be a serious challenge for even the most capable or Universal Remotes! It's just NOT going to happen. I put it to you all these devices will sit there as 'yet another black box' or just as game consols, until all available catchup and IPTV streams are avail on the one device. In the meantime, what combination of TBOX and new IP ready TV manufacturer gives the most available content? Samsung?....I heard Samsung is getting Foxtel and ABC Iview might get onto the TBox. If not perhaps onto a Sony Blu Tay. Also the Tbox perhaps might stream from LAN. I wouldn't be committing to ANYTHING until at least all this was available. No matter how good the bundles are... So from my googling, the following looks like the best/quickest way to get set up with the most IPTV content: A new Samsung IP enabled TV giving Foxtel catchup A new Sony BDP-30 Blu Ray giving ABC iView/Plus7/SBS catch up +/- Telstra TBox Anybody with any other ideas...please post! -
Telstra Announces Their New Pvr Going On Trial
boffin replied to petef's topic in Media Servers & Source Units
What is going on with IPTV at the moment? I mean which "box" will play EVERYTHING? youtube abciView Foxtel download "catchups" other FTA catchups bigpondTV bigpond movies video streams from your own USB drive or LAN TBox? LG IPTV enabled TV? Samsung IPTV enabledTV? Sony IPTV? xbox live? an updated Foxtel IQ? I mean what is going on is simply ridiculous. Do they really expect us to buy another3 STB, and 3 new TV's and set them all up in the one area with 10 remotes to watch everything we want? What a Joke! -
The points I was making were 1/ their signal quality is in the dark ages and is really shown up by the new STB's 2/ you already pay so much for the subscription.and decoding of the signal as it comes into your residence, so why do they care how many places you view the signal in your own house (if only to make more money). We got this sort of similar crap from Telstra when the cable modem service was first introduced. They "didn't support networking", you had to "pay" for additional cable modems etc etc. Then along came wirless broadband and they were brought screeming into the 21st century and there whole philosophy about computer home networking proved irrelevant, outdated and plan wrong. Same for Foxtel...they will be left behind. What I was saying was that in terms of networking picture qualtiy they are already being thrashed by cheap stb options and freely available FTA signals out their, that anyone can get there hands on. Why don't they just sell a cheap STB decoder for their signal that can be linked into multiple rooms?
