Sumiko Songbird Low Output MC Cartridge Launched

The Sumiko Songbird Low Output (£899.95) forms part of the brand's Reference Series which is, of course, manufactured in Japan.

The Sumiko design team has taken inspiration from the company's range-topping Starling model. It has reduced the number of high-purity copper coils, allowing the engineers to reduce further the cartridge's moving mass, which means the stylus can trace even finer details on the record's surface, says the American-managed brand.

Sporting an elliptical/ .3 x .7 micron stylus fitted to the 8.5 Gram cartridge, the Songbird Low Output has a stated output voltage/channel of 0.5 mV, with a quoted channel separation of 30 dB (1 kHz) and <0.5 dB (1 kHz) channel balance.

Requiring a 2 Gram tracking force, the Songbird's low-vibration construction and open generator design help create a cartridge that has a frequency response of 12 Hz-40 kHz and promises unparalleled performance at its price point, according to Sumiko.

Should you not have access to a Moving Coil output stage, Sumiko also offers a High Output model of the Songbird. This is said to bring all the detail and impact of a moving coil cartridge but, thanks to its electrical characteristics, makes it compatible with any high-quality moving magnet phono preamp.
