Party Like It’s 1989 - We Are Rewind Curtis GB-001 Boombox

We Are Rewind's GB-001 promises to get the party started 80s-style, with contemporary tech.

With the party season upon us and the phoenix-rise of the cassette tape (and mixtape) continuing with sales climbing over 400% in the last decade, We Are Rewind's Curtis GB-001 is now available.

Pitched as a "cassette player/recorder that rivals home speaker systems", the GB-001 promises "exceptional stereo sound with a full-spectrum stereo image, thanks to its separate left and right woofers and tweeters."

Where the classic 80s boombox could only handle cassettes, the GB-001 offers a wired aux connection and streaming via Bluetooth 5.4, giving you multiple options to utilise its four "Hi-Fi class loudspeakers" which are said to provide 104 Watts of total power output.

This modern jambox also boasts features such as a rechargeable battery, dynamic power control to reduce distortion, refined equalisation for a natural sound signature and a spatialisation function for a wider, more immersive stereo image.

Moreover, we're told that the We Are Rewind GB-001 also features a top-of-the-line cassette deck mechanism, complete with a powerful, user-adjustable motor that includes internal speed regulation.

Additionally, the Curtis portable cassette player/recorder supports both Type I and Type II (chrome) cassettes with optimised biasing. To ensure low-noise recording and the best possible frequency response, it uses an active AC erasing head.

Giving extra retro cred are the two backlit VU meters, which let you control playback and recording levels. The microphone input has an adjustable level for live recordings.

Priced at £379 | €449 | US$579 | A$770, the We Are Rewind Curtis GB-001 Boombox is on sale now.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
