Vertere Phono-1 LX Keeps the Look, Reworks the Magic Inside

At first glance, the new model looks very much like the Phono-1 that has been steadily refined over the past nine years. That is not necessarily a bad thing. The Phono-1 has always been a fairly understated box, with the real work happening inside, and the LX appears to continue that pattern rather than chasing a dramatic visual reset.

Vertere says the Phono-1 LX draws on development work from its higher-end Calon dual-mono precision phono preamplifier, which was shown at High End Munich in 2024. The company is positioning the LX as the most significant evolution of the Phono-1 platform yet, following the original model’s debut, the MkII update in 2019 and the Phono-1 MkII L in 2022.

StereoNET reported on the Phono-1 MkII L in 2022, when Vertere updated the British phono stage with a new gold-plated L-shaped circuit board, revised layout and improved access to its customisation DIP switches. That model also retained broad MM and MC cartridge-matching options, including ten gain settings, fifteen input impedance options and nine capacitance settings.

The new Phono-1 LX builds on that foundation with an upgraded PCB, revised internal DC power supply, improved AC input filtering, a new two-way phono amplifier earthing switch, updated chassis and cover, and Vertere’s blue-green power indicator LED.

Vertere says the upgraded PCB uses a superior gold-plated finish to support more consistent soldering across the board, while the revised internal DC power supply is said to deliver cleaner and more stable power to each circuit. As with most serious phono stages, this is where the small details matter. The signal coming from a cartridge is tiny, so improvements to noise control, grounding and power stability can be more than academic.

The AC input has also been reworked, with a specialised inductor designed to impede high-frequency interference before it enters the circuit. A second inductor on the post-transformer output is intended to provide another layer of filtering before power reaches the DC supply stage.

Grounding has been simplified through a new two-way earthing switch, allowing users to toggle between Earth Lift and Earth Connection depending on the rest of the system. Vertere’s current Phono-1 product information also highlights ground-control flexibility and low-noise operation as key parts of the design.

Visually, the LX remains close to the existing Phono-1 family, but Vertere has given the chassis and cover a cleaner finish. The new cover uses a fine textured metallic silver finish, while removing the four top fixing screws gives the unit a tidier, less interrupted appearance. The new blue-green power LED also brings the Phono-1 LX into line with Vertere’s DG X, Tempo, Imperium and Calon products.

Vertere describes the sonic gains as darker backgrounds, higher dynamic range, sharper spatial imaging and more lifelike vocal texture. Those are manufacturer claims for now, but the design direction is clear: the LX is less about adding features for the sake of a spec sheet and more about refining the electrical, mechanical and grounding behaviour of an already established phono stage.
