Margaret River winery recommendations

Featured Replies

A quick trip to Perth for 4 days includes heading to Margaret River today and coming back tomorrow evening. Poorly planned on my behalf, have left at home my sunnies, camera and wine for hosts that we are staying with in Eagle Bay tonight. Having lunch at Vasse Felix today. Looking for another 3 to 4 to visit today or tomorrow. Jules has volunteered to drive as well.

Appreciate your must not miss winery recommendation. I have a few in mind but they tend to be the well known so some smaller ones would be good also.

  • Not so small but we enjoyed a great meal, and the wines at Watershed winery a few weeks ago.

As a wine tragic I recommend :

Gralyn Estate Caves Road... Cab Sav and Fortifieds are brilliant and they let you taste the full range... Stunning wines.

Flame Tree ... Great Cab Sav and Chardonnay

Pierro .... Some of the best Chardonnay in the country

Cullen Estate..... You probably know them already

McHenenry Honnen .... Caves road.... Stunning.. Ex Cape Mentelle wine maker .. 2 Jimmy Watson trophys

Woodlands ... Caves road..... Stunning

Redgate wines... Underrated worth checking out

Xanadu estate.... Some of the finest cab save and Chardonnay

Enjoy and let us know how you went......

Cheers

Gralyn Estate make a memorable white port. Must get back there and retry their fortifieds soon to cover my winter drinking habits.

Some great recommendations @@SETSergio

Pierro and Woodlands are my favourites

Hey Mark

have a great trip.

My trip would consist of

Cape Mantelle

Moss Wood

Woodlands

Xanadu

Howard Park

I wouldn't bother. Just go to Spud Shed at Jandakot and buy however many $6 bottles of whatever you want...oops, I meant Liquor Shed.

Xanadu definitely alive and kicking, the Stevens Rd Cab Sav is ridiculously good.

Recent vintage (2011 I think) just got 99 points from Halliday.

ENJOY!!!

My favourite in Margaret river was always voyager estate

+1 for Xanadu, had a very good meal there. I'm not drinking anymore but the missus wat pretty keen on the cab sav also.

Cheers Dave.

As a former restaurant owner, the war office and I used to get stuck into some outrageously good offerings from our wine merchant who was selling off short dozens of an amazing array of quality wines. Just before we sold our business, we bought hundreds of bottles of some premium stuff for ridiculously cheap prices that you would never see again today.

Needless to say we grabbed everything from:

Leeuwin Estate *

Vasse Felix *

Cullen Estate *

Cape Mentelle *

Moss Wood *

Sandalford Estate

Plantagenet *

Capel Vale *

Moondah Brook

Evans & Tate

and highly recommend any of those great wineries with an asterisk.

The other ones were also very good but whatever wines of theirs we drank, they all seemed to lack the quality and finesse of the former.

In a nutshell, you could pick any of these guys and find plenty of worthwhile wines. Just keep a lid on yer spending as some of these classics go for mega dollars.

Enjoy your trip.

Pierro and Woodlands top my list for 'must visit' whenever I make it over there... Woodlands Cellar Door is more commercial than it used to be, Pierro is still 'rustic' and both have great wines...

Stella Bella is a lovely setting, great staff and not so big that you find hordes of people there.

Larger ones I'd pick out Leeuwin Estate, Cullen and Xanadu.

I gather Fraser Gallup are opening a cellar door this month so that might be worth checking out as they do make a decent drop...

Thanks for the recommendations guys. Wine tasting didn't pan out as expected. After a lovely 3 hour lunch and wine tasting at Vasse Felix most of Saturday was gone. Played tourist by heading to Rivermouth and then Yallingup before heading back to Eagle Bay. Had a swim followed by a couple of beers and a bottle of Pierro on the beach with our friends. Headed back across he road to their place for a lovely meal. Had Spotify going and played classic 60 and 70s Rock until 2 am. No Margaret River wines over dinner. We knocked off a 2006 Moët which was ok, not a lot of character for a vintage. Followed by a few bottles of Oregon Pinot Noir. Our host like me loves PN.

Sunday was a slow start, big breakfast followed by a swim. Did some tastings at Aravina and then onto Cullen's before heading back to Perth.

So only got to three wineries. Will come back for an extended stay and check out a few more. Our friends place at Eagle Bay is sensational. Will be back there any chance we get.

Spent two more days in Perth visiting friends and had a number of swims. Lovely beaches and lovely weather.

Was going to text you on Sunday about domaine naturliste after having a glass of their floris Chardonnay at cottage point inn. Very very nice, will definitely follow up on them. About $30 a bottle.

Lovely beaches

Yep, Perth has some of the best beaches in the world...IMHO.
