Off the grog!!

Featured Replies

Not a fan of dieting as a method for weight loss. Dieting never really worked for me but even half an hours brisk walk per day drops the Kilo's off me.

In my teens and 20's I ran 5 miles day ,weekdays and as a consequence I now have bad knees and arthritis in my spine. Current info suggests that an hours brisk walk a day has the same cardio-vascular benefit as running for 30 mins without the joint impact problems.

Sensible eating coupled with brisk walking is imho the best way for those over 40.

As for alcohol , I swapped from beer to white wine and soda which gave me the sensation of a 'big' drink without all the calories of beer.

97 kg. Lost nothing this week, not happy!

Time to start watching the occasional snack. Maybe they aren't that occasional.

This is where honesty and MFP (or similar tracking) assist. Also, some weeks you won't always lose weight. Look to the longer term for absolute loss - every 2-3weeks you should lose some weight. Don't sweat the "why didn't I lose at least 200g etc"

Keep on going Darren.... You are doing okay

Just popping over from that other thread :D  and...is anyone of you lot trying the 5.2 diet while 'off the grog' at all? Or is it just off the grog and hope for the best in the long run?

I started my little effort a few days before this thread appeared and I'm 'on the grog' so to speak but I'm exercising everyday for a good hour or so and I've been doing the 16:8 for the full period and the weight is starting to slip off and I'm toning up.

I've got 15 yrs on Daz and I can't run real well due to knackered knees and I can't do weights due to knackered shoulder and bad back but I can walk pretty fast and I can touch my toes which aint bad as I couldn't see my toes at ones stage and I can touch the top of a door frame with my big toes so the hammys are beginning to stretch nicely.

First weight loss effort was a few months ago that got me down to 114 from 125 and then 114 to 109 and now 109 to 102.8. I'm pretty happy with that so far. My playing weight for footy many years ago was around 96 or so I'm heading into forgotten territory at the moment.

No fizzy drinks, no sweet drinks, no full cream milk just a bit of uv skim in my coffee, bugger all dairy and fresh red meat about every 3 weeks and basically no processed meat at all(bar a bit of bacon once a month) and more seafood than you can poke a stick at.

I treat Coopers red label and green label as rewards for work done and of course it's a well known fact that French bubbly is only ever good for you no matter what time you have it (it's true! Ask John Mortimer).

So stick at it guys, great to see the mens shed kinda encouragement mentality going on here amongst you all.

Rare family get together at my place so I'm out... For today... 07835a1468c48f4ad305b43b09c80bac.jpg

@@Luc if you are doing the rock work, you would be plenty active etc. Or is it more supervision nowadays?

Your stretching and weight loss are going great guns.

Dunno about mens shed etc, just a heap of fat b@stards trying to lose some folds.

@Darren69  Daz I've got no work on basically, haven't for nearly a month now and nothing in sight just at the moment and most tradies I know are in the same boat: Not enough work going around and too many trades to do it. Thank you to the powers that be that have bought this about. :(

So I'm not plenty active but I'm making myself plenty active. PB on the treadmill this morning and then a day mowing weeding, cleaning ect and then a beer and breakfast at 4.30pm(a fresh whole whiting cooked on the barbie with no oil no nothing. So I actually went 24.0 instead of 16.8 which might actually be pushing it a bit as getting energy back up is a problem if your basically fasting.

If your wondering what 16.8 is it's a step up from the 5.2 regime. You have breakfast/lunch and tea with in the eight hours from 12 noon till 8 pm and nothing else for the next 16 hrs. But you only have those three meals if you feel like it and at the moment I'm just going on a little snack like the whiting and then tea about 6.30-ish and a wine(plus the beer I just had) and that's it apart from about 2 to 3 litres of water a day.

Less is going in and I'm using up more of what's left over so the flab is starting to rearrange itself. The Handbrake says I'm thinner in the face now and legs and my work shorts are getting a bit loose, so somethings happening.

Because of the fairly big amount of water I'm drinking I can get way big swings on the bathroom scales if I hop on each day..so I've given up on that and I have a peek every three to four days. It's nothing to vary anywhere up to 2.5kgs otherwise.

That's why I said  back somewhere in this thread that it's pointless weighing yourself each day, just do it on a Monday and be pleasantly surprised and that will give the motivation to keep going for the next week in front of you.

That amount of water each day will also drop the weight off.

Hope the work picks up soon, very hard to stay off the grog with idle hands, I have found.

Not to mention the ongoing filthy lucre requirement.

As of Thursday I have been on my pre-surgery food regime: 3 x Optifast shakes a day, rabbit salad at lunch time and 200g's of protein with no-carb veggies at night. Coffee/tea has to be black. Lo-cal soft drinks are allowed . All of this is aimed at shrinking my liver so that the surgeon has easy access when it comes to removing a very large part of my stomach on March 31st.

This should be fun.

Yup, best wishes from myself also.

Thanks guys. Hopefully the hospital will have wi-fi and I can update from my bed, if not it will be a few days off the air for me.

Hmm...that could mean a requirement of only one thing..........extra medication!

Gosh that is some serious surgery. Best of luck with it; I am sure you are in expert hands.

@  Daz- how are travelling my friend? I'm 137 days off the grog today. And down to 81kg. Feel much healthier for it, I must say.

Where did you start your journey @ ; what was your weight, what was your build and height?

Good luck Juk. That's some big commitment.

I have fallen off the wagon. However, this week we have cause to announce that our 2nd child is due in September. And the more I think about it the more excited I become. So, yes, I have had a drink. :)

Congratulations Jake. What marvellous news. That is worth a drink or two ;)

@ Luc - short (5'7) and fat (92kg) with a small frame and no muscle to speak of.

Currently 11kg down from my heaviest, and aiming to get to 75kg.
