Pizza restuarants (Melbourne)

Featured Replies

Hi guys, what are your favourite pizza restuarants in melbourne? I'm peed off with my favourite one after going there again last weekend with the family for my father-in-laws birthday so unfortunately I won't be going back there. As always the pizzas were fantastic but the service is just not acceptable and they were just plain rude.

So where else can I go that make nice authentic italian pizzas and please nobody suggest Dominos, when their ads come on the tv it makes me sick.

Any pizza restaurant that does not use the fake "ham" that Domino's and the rest of them use is halfway there. I haven't been in Vic for very long but the best I have found is Cavallino's on Lygon St. There must be a dozen Ferrari themed restaurants on Lygon St but this one is quite over the top  Nice thin crust, herbs on the pizza, and good choice of good quality toppings. And not too expensive.

I don't believe i've been to Cavallino's. What about places other than Lygon st?

Pizza is highly reeommomended

Well there always Topolinos in StKilda.

Their LaFiesta with artichokes is a winner..ask JA aswell.;)

A few weeks ago went down to the StKilda foreshore for the worst pizza experience in years,$17 for a very small cold crappy shredded ham topped excuse for food in years.

A few years ago a new place opened in our area that went gangbusters with the best real italian style pizzas. Can't remember the name  nor whether its still as good as it was when it opened. Not cheap but was exceptionaly good.

Then there was Mr Wolf (Inkerman st StKilda) which was really nice but overpriced for Pizza with a pompous fine dining attitude from the waiters and pricing to match.Havn't been back for seconds.

But with the family LaRoche Acland st StKilda is our fav, abit grundgy but good value and always tastey.

Sadly I don't venture far away from the local neighbourhood these days.:o

DIY - I had a misunderstanding with a waiter at one of the better pizza places in my town on a bucks night and at some stage during our 'discussion' I may have slipped and accidentally hit my head on his nose. He took it the wrong way and had me removed.

Anyway, I learnt to make my own pizza's (base etc) and have never looked back! You control the quality of ingredients and can make it how you like it. You can also experiment with ingredients/flavours. One thing I have noticed though - it comes at a price. You can easily spend $25+ on making a pizza in ingredients alone.

On the occassions I cbf'd I just get run-of-the-mill takeaway pizza. It hits the spot and is great value at $6-7 for a feed.

When I was a starving student living in Fitzroy I used to live on the pizzas from Il Carreto in Carlton. The ambience inside was pretty ordinary, so takeaway was the go, but the pizzas were awesome, and you could get a family size for $7 - that took care of dinner that night and brekky the next day .

They always have an entry in the Moomba festivale BTW, where they take their cart (carreto) along and dress in their national garb.

Cheers,

Jake

The DIY option is great but sometimes you just want to get out. Goats cheese on a pizza tastes great.

it's almost impossible to get an 'authentic' Italian Pizza in Oz

Go down to the south of Italy where pizza originated from, and you'll see what real Pizza is

Certainly not the bloated, ingredient extravaganza slop that passes for Pizza here

Generally true Nudey, but Ive had some wonderful pizzas in Melbourne. And the best ones had no more than 2 toppings.

Why whats wrong with inch high cheapo toppings that are still abit raw with a really soggy base??

Them's Pizza, Jakester!

Pizza was always the staple diet of the peasant, ingredients were expensive or unavailable

Fuscallino - Church St, Richmond.

Toto's - Lygon St, Carlton

Maybe the merest suggestion of a tomato sauce spread really thin across the base, but I dont see that as a topping. And I dont recall cheese cohabiting with the pig and fungus.

I'm surprised that the pizza restuarant that I have now rejected has not been mentioned here. I prefer minimal topping too. Jake, Prosciutto and mushrooms on a pizza is hard to beat.

I'll have to try out some of the other restuarants listed here. Thanks.

Try this- roasted butternut, pine nuts and crumbled feta with the faintest smear of tomato underneath. And a super thin base. Its senstadium:)

Or come over to my place if you're too far from Andythiingaroni's Phantasmagorical Pizza-porium:D
