7Hz x Crinacle Diablo planar IEMs + CrinEar Protocol Max amp/dac

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I'm struggling to gel with a recent purchase... as the title states, 7Hz Diablo + the CrinEar Protocol Max.

First experience with a planar IEM; I have no idea if there is a run-in period & if this will make a difference but my initial experience is mixed. They are detailed, warm sounding & produce a wall of sound but really lack impact, particularly in lower frequencies. I'm not an experienced audio fiend by any means so I'm struggling to articulate here; imagine a kick drum but rather than a tight / visceral impact the effect is more of a wobble. There is an absolute mountain of low end extension, just lacks gravitas.

Any comments / thoughts (even if general re planar vs dynamic drivers) that may help explain what I'm hearing here? For reference I've tried both laptop & iPhone via USB-C into the Protocol Max in both standard & boost gain modes. Seems to be plenty of power driving but the effect is the same.

Thanks in advance!

Update!

Had a great chat to the team at hangout. Simple answer was yes, planar IEMs need anywhere from 50-100hrs of run in time before everything has completely relaxed / settled in & operating as intended. Somewhat anecdotal I guess but good to know. I didn't even consider this but they said to set them up on a laptop & run at least on 70% volume for a couple of days - great tip.

As an interim / fun option, there's also the ability to play around with EQ via the Protocol Max. They suggested trying this, particularly loading in the tuning of Diablo's sister model Divine to see if this is more my speed... I've done so, it is.

Will update again when done
