2007 CD reissue of Sly & The Family Stone's 1967 debut album. (I picked up a copy in a 2nd hand rack today.) I don't think this album did all that well at the time of its release, but it set the scene for their follow up album Dance To The Music and their subsequent albums which is where things really happened.

And Robert Randolph & The Family Band's debut 2003 studio album, Unclassified, which I also picked up in the same 2nd hand rack as the Sly Stone album I just mentioned above. Its another excellent album from Robert Randolph who is apparently influenced by bands such as Earth, Wind & Fire and Sly & the Family Stone. (at least according to wikipedia!).

2006 Dual Disc release

Another album I picked up in a 2nd hand rack yesterday. I'm generally not a huge Bruce Springsteen fan, but I thought this looked quite interesting and the price was dirt cheap so figured I couldn't miss. On this album Bruce Springsteen got together with a group of American folk / country musicians and they recorded a collection of folk songs live in the studio, on mostly acoustic instruments. The 'Dual Disc' format is something you don't see much these days, but it is really just a double sided disc with a CD on one side and DVD on the other side. (as described in the image above).

I played the DVD side last night, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The playing from the musicians is excellent, and it was obvious they were all enjoying what they were doing. That also comes through in the 30 minute (actually 33 minute) documentary film, which includes interviews and videos of some of the recordings. Below are a couple of clips from the documentary film. (Perhaps I might revise my opinion of Bruce Springsteen after playing this.)
