Tell me about using a NAS with Time Machine

Featured Replies

I've been using Time Capsules to backup our 3 MacBooks ever since moving to Macs about 20 years ago.

I keep getting the warnings that my Time Capsules will eventually be incompatible with MacOS and I need to make other backup arrangements.

As someone who has never used a NAS could I please ask for some recommendations and instructions?

Thanks.

How Time Machine backups work with a NAS is very dependant on the NAS itself. QNAP and Synology have different methods to enable TM backups.

The Simplest method (now that Apple's own TM hardware is long out of support) is using an external USB/Thunderbolt drive.

I was hoping to avoid a USB drive and keep using something that was automatic like Time Machine is.

If I was buying a NAS to use with Time Machine which one should I get?

Either a Synology or QNAP NAS will work but they require configuration that's more involved than a Time Capsule solution was.

Depending on your router you might be able to plug a USB drive into that and use it for Time Machine backups.

Thanks Mike.

I tried a USB drive in the router but it's a non starter due to the router model. I guess I could get a new router.

I like the idea of more than one HDD as backup in case of failure. That's why I'm leaning towards a NAS.

I was being lazy hoping someone could suggest a simple turnkey alternative to the Time Capsules. I'll research QNAP and Synology a bit more.

+1 for synology, good reliable gear.
