Sydney advice

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Myself and the "boys" (sub-middle-aged work colleagues, and buddies) are heading to Sydney for a weekend.

This is our second boys' trip to Sydney. Last time we went to Tetsuya, but weren't overly impressed.

This time we are planning to eat at Marque (dinner), Quay (dinner) and China Doll (lunch). We need one more lunch venue, for Saturday. We were something not too arty. Maybe, a great steak? I recall a thread on the best steaks in Sydney, but I just can't find it.

Could someone make a recommendation?

We will be staying at the Westin, Martin Place, so somewhere close-ish would be ideal.

Cheers!

Ted

Steak you could try Steersons or I'm Angus??

How about ribs? If you're a fan, you HAVE to go to Tony Romas on Sussex Street. Not sure if they do lunch though, may just be dinner.

They're all good restaurants. For a change of pace that's great French food, very unpretentious and with Sydney's best sommelier, try Fix St James. Especially if you're interested in exploring a great wine menu. Let them know Alistair recommended them and let Stuart and Tristan do the food and wine choices for you.

Hurricanes is pretty good for Steak and Ribs.

I'll definitely look into it.

I think Rockpool is supposed to be the best steak

I heard similar things. It's in the running

Excellent idea. I love ribs! Perfect filler, before some fine ales.

Beef tartare, and chips. YUM!

Reminds me of our honeymoon. If they did hot, passionate sex, it would be even more reminiscent!

I might get confused if I go there on a boys night.

+ 1 for Hurricanes for Ribs....service is **** though

Cafe Sydney has done the best steak I have had in the past 12 months and I have eaten just about everywhere (I work in town). Chophouse is good too, but not really somewhere for out of towners

I don't rate China Doll or Marque....but that's just me. Black has a good rep for steak.....not been there, its in the Casino.

Shame Darcy's hasn't reopened yet......if you want to get "out of town" pop up to Paddington as there are a few gems there

"Way" out of town is Pilu at freshwater or good old Icebergs (the food is great.....forgetting any preconceptions about the location)

Edit: Hurricanes makes Tony Romas look like an old crappy maccas..trust me on that

Edit: also The Baxter Inn (for a drink or more)

Venue 505 for great live music, food, wine and whisky (whiskey).

Thanks. Hurricanes seems to be an option. What didn't you like about Marque? I was previously looking at other options including: Est, Aria or Momofuku

If you want something different with fabulous Italian food made freshly each day and in Stanley Street East Sydney you should try Sagra

They are young guys with a great cooking pedigree. The food is cheap for what it is and the wine is also incredibly good value.

Great write-up in gourmet traveller and good foods review.  Also being in Stanley Street East Sydney it isn't so sterile.  There is also a nice old pub the Lord Roberts across the road.

This would be something you would enjoy and I am pretty sure they had steak last time I was there.  You could check.

Also it is close to cbd prob $10 cab fare.

Enjoy Sydney.

Actually if you want Sardinian food Pilu is awesome. Nice views on the beach, only problem not much else to do around the restaurant and a hefty cab fare.

Yeah I rate Pilu big time....been about 18mths since I was last there though...worth the cab ride

Re Marque....just didn't seem to be anything special. IMO a lot of food in Sydney these days is good/ok and expensive.....it should be great and expensive

As I said, that particular steak I had at Cafe Sydney blew me away....just one of those memorable lunches (in saying that it was something like $65 which is sort of rude.....but hey, on a nice day you cant beat sitting out on the balcony there)

I'll reiterate, the service at Hurricanes is terrible, especially for larger groups of say 10+, but the ribs are good. I wandered past some Brazilian BBQ place I think it was on William St on Monday....there seem to be a lot of these places now. Wildfire use to be good.....not anymore

Aria is great for dinner.....stale at lunchtime IMO

Est is decent

Like Peter the Greek I am not much of a fan of China Doll. It lovely having lunch there on a sunny Sydney day with a group of friends, but I would not go there for the food. It's average and pricey. If you are after good views and good food for lunch then agree with Peter on Pilu or Icebergs. If its good Asian then the old standbys of Longrain and Billy Kwong do excellent food in an unpretentious manner though I'd tend to go there of an evening. Upmarket Asian then Momofuku or Mr Wongs and again evenings.

I have been to Marque 3 times over a number of years. I have found the food to be outstanding once and pretty good the other 2 times but it just lacks atmosphere for me. I have not been to Bentley since it moved Ito the city but it's been my fav Sydney restaurant for many years. Innovative food with an exceptional wine list.

And beware of a number of Sydney restaurants with no booking policy. It's works fine if you are happy to put you name down and go for a drink somewhere and wait for a call. I never find it an issue but I have friends who do.

Have fun sounds like a great weekend with the boys.

Be careful with Quay there are a whole bunch of cruise ships coming into Sydney at the moment.  A good way to really spoil a great view and a great meal.

If there are cruise ships and you want the view, go Cafe Sydney.  I have been to Bentleys twice in Surrey Hills and wouldn't go back as I found it a bit too arty and not great food for the price.  Excellent but pricey wine list.

Est is great food but stuffy atmosphere (i really like simple).
