Hi all,

Ive recently inherited a MC7270 and C30 pre-amp which I’d like to get serviced. Does anyone have any recommendations in Melbourne (I’m in Thornbury) for a service?

Kind regards,

David

Ps - will also be upgrading the speakers. Its a small room but wouldn’t mind some compact floor standers that would do it justice if anyone had any recommendations

AFAIK Klapp AV in Chapel St sell the McIntosh brand, they'll be able to refer you to a technician.

What's your budget for speakers, and what's the room size, etc.? The more info you provide the more useful the recommendations will be, I should imagine.

The two amps look really fab, hope you can get it repaired.

Thanks very much Steff.  Room is 3.7 x 3.7m and budget is relatively low and around $700 to $1000 (second hand) depending on speakers. I like the look 👀 of the Kef 104/2’s potentially but might be a bit chunky for the room. And I need something that can sit quite tight against the wall.

There's quite a bit of speaker trade at that price level here through the classifieds from what I've seen.

The amps you have there have the capacity to drive much costlier (and also larger) models, of course.

For a room that size you could also consider standmounts (I'm not entirely sure what difference that might make soundwise, might be good to have a raised tweeter & mids when it comes to early reflections in a small room)

The classifieds neatly execute quite pinpoint searches and range limits ,e.g.

Lenahan ML-1

Edit: Ah, tight against the wall you say, maybe Audio Note Speakers.

My older ML-1's are a little out from the wall. Older models pop up occasionally close to the upper end of your budget.

The 104/2's should probably not be right against the back wall either.

If you can find KEF LS50 for that price mark, they're very good and a smaller form factor. And you can easily go and listen to them in local stores (albeit later and improved models). In 2023 they were in the classifieds frequently, not so currently. They like an amp with a lot of grunt, and that's exactly what you have there.

Tough on that budget to get something to match potential of the McIntosh combo. You'll need something front ported if you need to put them up against the wall. I'd suggest saving a bit more. Double your budget should get you some older high quality speakers from a British maker that are often made to fit smaller rooms.
