Love that Balkan brass music.Fanfare Ciocarlia's (who perform at Womad in March) take on Steppenwolf's Born To Be Wild. :)

Now that we're headed into summer, I'm feeling like a bit of calypso. Got some Cyril Diaz vinyl headed my way in the post. Anyone got any recommendations for some good (available) tunes/albums/compilations? Personally prefer the brass band kinda stuff, rather than the (sometimes cheesy) vocal tracks.

Hi Bassline Junkie. My knowledge of Calypso is limited to Harry Belafonte, unfortunately.I did see this lady perform at Womad a few years ago and she was fantastic. She had a ball performing and had the crowd dancing. So much energy for a 70 year old. :)

P.S British label Soul Jazz releases very good compilations of music from that part of the world and it might be worth your while checking their website.Cheers.

Thanks MBS, have been checking out Soul Jazz and Soundway- my first port of call, both excellent labels. Not a lot of material around on the calypso side of things, though I shouldn't be overly surprised by this. Obviously has had its day as a style, but some beautiful music was made. Perfect for sunny afternoons in the backyard with some rum and BBQ!

Appleton Estate 25 year old or Wray & Nephew White Overproof? :)

Maybe even a Guinness punch! :party:hiccup

No worries guys- thought it was about time to make my first post in this thread. Have been lurking for a little while now, and have found some fantastic new music thanks to you gents (and ladies possibly).

Would love to be hitting up Womadelaide next year, but a heavily pregnant wife will be throwing a spanner in those works! Have booked a consolation ticket for Toumani and Sidiki Diabate at Hamer Hall on the Thursday before Womad. Also hoping to catch Bombino in Melbourne too.

saw Toumani couple of years back at a workshop session at Womad I was sitting so close I could have leaned out and touched him! The workshop sessions allow you such intimate surroundings. Dark horses for next year's Womad are Soil & "Pimp" Sessions, Japanese death jazz practitioners, who knows they may slip in a Melbourne gig!

Here's a video to brighten up your day (quite literally)!

Hi fellas :)

Edited by ferchersan

Good morning ferchersan. :) I like the cover on that album. What's it like?I have their first Six Degrees double album.I must drag it out for a spin one day.I haven't liatened to it in quite a while.

Hi @@mrbuzzardstubble . Good. I really enjoyed it this morning, the strings sound wonderful. I bought it around the same time that I bought their 'Tales From The Grand Bazaar' CD. That caught my attention more, though after another listen of this earlier today, I will keep it out for a few more spins. Cheers :)

Cyril Diaz, Voodoo EP on Soundway Records. Was looking for this for a while. Eventually found it right here in Oz from Mighty Ape. Beautiful tenor sax-led calypso!

Ticket booked for Bombino at Howler in Melbourne. Starting to feel ok about missing Womad!  Anyone not familiar with this guy should check him out, especially if you like your desert blues
