Best place to buy port in Melbourne?

Featured Replies

Hi, I’ve got a 20 litre charred oak barrel that I want to fill with port. Any suggestions where to buy in bulk?

surely the best place would be Port Melbourne?

Depends on whether you've already had port in it, or if it's a brand new barrel...

The barrel is a decade old but only ever had water in it to stop it from shrinking.

Great stuff! It's a large barrel, so there's a couple of ways you could go - either filling it with expensive stuff to begin with, or starting with less expensive and changing it to your taste. Try looking up Liquidlux (as they have a few options), and all the regular places around Rutherglen (Stanton & Killeen, Morris, etc.).

I'd probably go with a mostly mid-range 'port', along with maybe 2-3% of good brandy and maybe some other stuff (tokay/topaque, or muscat, or even a sherry or marsala - whatever is to your taste). Make sure you have enough spare (and kept in the dark) to keep topping up your barrel. Leave for 6 months and see how you're going.

Tip from a friend, when you buy some more to keep topping up your barrel, if you're adding 5 litres of new stuff, siphon off 5 litres of the barrel into some glass carboys and use them to top up your barrel for the next few months.

Have a check on some of the Barossa producers that may do bulk Port- Seppeltsfield and Basedow come to mind. They may be able to ship in 20L plastic containers. Tinlins in McLaren Vale certainly do a 20L option.

Ideally only 80-90% fill the barrel (and try and keep it to this approximate level), fortifieds don't really age significantly in a full barrel.
