You guys/gals have seen from my posts that I'm a bit of a Tahbilk tragic, so it was with a sinking heart that I saw the latest post(s) on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/TahbilkWines/

ย

And here's a couple of pics in case you don't do FB:

The patch just 'north' of the red buildings in the first photo are the 1860 Shiraz vines!!! ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ญ

(or so I understand)

Bugger.

I usually pick up half a dozen cases from them every year. Excellent whites, particularly the Rhone varietals.

ย

I wonder if their cellar under the estate road has succumbed too...

Heartbreaking. We had a lovely holiday just earlier this year at Nagambie Lakes in the Holiday Park.ย
To see it now and all the cabins completely underwater is very sad. Many families will likely not be visiting their permanent vans this Summer.

Question - would flood like this ruin a vineyard? Will the vines recover?

Old vines go down a long long way. Root networks can get down to 25m or more below the surface. Depending on the flood erosion or if there are any impacts with larger washed away / floating items (vehicles, pontoons or boats broken away from moorings etc), then most vines will likely recover. Bud burst is due any time in the next few weeks in Victoria so my bet is this year is going to be a near total loss for blocks in and around the immediate estate for Tahbilk (they are a massive producer and have vineyards and suppliers of contract fruit from all over, so they may have no impacts on some lines and varietals).

I think the vines will be ok. Langhorne Creek is well known for flooding and it may be considered part of the 'terroir' in that part of the world. Best vineyards in the Creek are generally on the floodplain.
