emesbee Posted April 29, 2023 Posted April 29, 2023 I'd been working my way through the Jan Akkerman boxed set I bought recently, then this order arrived yesterday so just had to play it last night. Brainbox was the band Jan Akkerman was in before he joined Focus. As well as lead guitar, he also played organ, vibes and bass (on 'Woman's Gone'). The other members were Kazimierz Lux (Kaz Lux) - vocals and percussion, Pierre van der Linden - drums, Andre Reijnen - bass. Flute on 'Dark Rose' and 'Scarborough Fair' is by Tom Barlage and piano on 'Woman's Gone' is by Rob Hoeke. This was their first album, released in 1969. Apparently Jan Akkerman was kicked out of the band shortly before the release of this album by their manager who took exception to him also jamming with musicians such as Thijs van Leer among others. I guess that was his lead-in to Focus. Pierre van der Linden left Brainbox and joined Focus some time later (at the prompting of Jan Akkerman). This is a pretty good album containing a variety of originals and covers. The Esoteric release is from 2011, with the original album 24 bit remastered plus singles and B-sides (apparently this is all of the Brainbox recordings that feature Jan Akkerman). Dark Rose Sea Of Delight. This is around 17 minutes long. In the liner notes Jan Akkerman says that they went into the studio to record a 3 minute piece, but it turned into an impromptu jam all recorded live. Some great drumming in this. 4

2Brix Posted April 29, 2023 Posted April 29, 2023 Well it's late Saturday afternoon here and finally getting to sit down and spin a few (hopefully) of the LPs i picked up in Japan a couple of weeks ago.. First up Howard Jones, 1985 USA pressing - which might seem odd (having purch in Japan) but good value NM/NM at 800 Yen (about $10 Aussie) 9
Ash76 Posted April 29, 2023 Posted April 29, 2023 I've had this record for years from a small collection I was given but have never played it. With Harry's passing, now's the time Harry Belafonte - Calypso 1956 Aussie mono pressing 6 1
Ash76 Posted April 29, 2023 Posted April 29, 2023 Been looking for this album for years. Finally found it on cassette at the guitar shop. The Pogues - If I Should Fall From Grace With God 1988 German cassette 5 1
2Brix Posted April 29, 2023 Posted April 29, 2023 Just finished spinning this. Thomas Dolby - Blinded with Science - 1982 Japanese pressing. NM and picked up for the princely sum of 550 Yen. A six track "Mini LP" (EP?) which opens with the classic She Blinded Me With Science (short version) and closes with a long version thereof....and...they...schlapp!! Bouncey! 2B is geek happy 6
