Hi Derek,

You would not recognise me I’d imagine, we’ve crossed paths at Perth Woodschool and Claremont Showgrounds over the years, I’m just a hobby woodworker ( well not too often) that enjoys going to those shows to see new innovations and to enjoy the amazing creativity and inspiring craftsmanship of others.

And I also happen to very much enjoy sitting in front of a stereo with a glass or two.

Cheers

Mark

I don't.  😜  There's little to no interest in hi-fi, hence the well and truly separate building I can escape to.  Sometimes hi-fi should not be shared just like chocolate. 🤣

  • I enjoyed your story and the pics of your great room and set up Derek, but i personally couldn't live with the offset TV. Oh and love the artwork

"I cannot be a true audiophile"
do you need it to be? (even so it is a definition subjetive as thousands of websites say it).
I will share this "stories", like a kind of parable.

I was in the house with friends, between snacks, coffe and talking, some song started to play in my system, my friend suddenly focused in the system to listen with attention and surprised asked me:  "are you audiophile?  it sound very good!, what is the brand?"
my reply: really I don't know what you mean, I just heard this device and I like it, I don't know about audiophile or brand, it sound good, I heard it, I like it, and I got it. 🤷‍♂️

Robert Smith, famous by the band The Cure was in an interview, the girl reporter asked:
"your coat is very good, nice!, ellegant, is from some dress designer or a exclusive brand?"
what kind of question is that?, do you care about it? I saw it and I like it, that's why I wear it  just because I like it so much, I don't know  if designer or the brand

 - I know some guy with expensive, good, brand, very nice sound equipment and system, maybe my car does not reach that cost.
it sounds really god. an he don't know about sound or music or audio, systems, hardware, and he likes wide variety of music. expensive gear: is he audiophile?

- I don't have expensive gear, good quality brands for amp, preamp, drivers/speakers, audiophile grade RCA plugs..  and I know a little about audio:  harmonics, wave / spectrum, dB clipping, equalizer parametric, eq graphic, mixer, phono, ground, recording minidisc, cassette, cd, F.M. Radio Antenna is better model X, I read in spanish, english and portugues forums, websites, blogs, I watch videos more often related to audio. am I audiophile?

- let's imagine you have now € 14 000 EUR, maybe $ 23 000 AUD + extra bonus of $ 9 000 AUD.
ready to buy better equipment, improve a room, upgrade the place and now your speakers are acoustic boxes with internal components with hig quality materials + preamp, amp, maybe limiter and crossover, D.A.C.   . are you now a true audiophile?

imagine a girl being a true audiophile because she has a lot of devices and a room with sophisticated setup.
some day  she sells all the audio system and gear, every cable and all the components:  already  is not she audiophile anymore?   (buying again devices and with a new sophisticated setup is she audiophile "again" ?

hey friend  :D I remember "gamers", pc gamer, mous gamer, usb gamer, air fan gamer, bed gamer, SSD gamer. .

let's go dance ..  :thumb:

My question for all is “have you found a balance?”, and/or “is a balance even a consideration?”.

Hi Derek. I found your post very interesting and relevant as we progress in this hobby of ours and get older doing it. The question you ask is a most resonating one too. I am asking myself this now and am trying to come to terms with the reality. After moving around a bit with gear and variety of it, and after finding a more comfortable niche in it, I see that balance is a consideration for sure and I am looking for it with some success.

I see a lot of audio guys jumping form one thing to another and often chasing next best thing without necessarily getting greatly more satisfied. I see it also interesting how some the readers of your post have picked up on assessing and commenting more on your gear and room than maybe the underlying questions and concepts you wanted to bring to the tables. Maybe its just us old guys thing more alike in audio than the young uns. 🙂

Thanks Alan.

I think it is the same where ever there is a passion and it gets to become a focus on a forum. I am on woodworking forums as well, and some guys chase the tools instead of just enjoying the experience. But there are those that enjoy the tools for what they bring to the experience.

A nice thread this one.

Reminding us that audio has to fit in with our lifestyles,  its not an "all or nothing" proposition!

yes, absolutely right triptaka, as much as we may want to fight it at times. I dont intend going broke and preventing me and my wife retiring happily in the chasing of a mirage like dream.
