ayou2 Posted October 17, 2012 Posted October 17, 2012 Most of the cheap brands buy up old technology, sometimes up to 3-4 generations old. Eg: Samsung thinks model X panel will sell 10 million units world wide, so they make 10 million "shell units" but only sell 8 million fully assembled. They make another 1 million "budget" models under their own badge but the remaining 1 million go out to all the no namers, who do the necessary finish work. So technically ... yes the finished product may have Samsung origins, but its a bit like Great Wall utes, claiming to be a Toyota Hi Lux, just because they had the same chassis ........ as an example ...... Not that thats what happens ..... example only. 1
DoggieHowser Posted October 18, 2012 Posted October 18, 2012 Many years ago I bought an Amoi branded 37" 1080p TV. It was one of the first 1080p TVs and it also supported 1080p24 which Samsung and other major brands did not. The scaler built in wasn't great but native 1080p was great. I think if you understood the limitations and knew what you were buying, it's ok. A lot of Sony TVs are also built in China. But those days of Chinese value brands are gone. I recently got a 60" plasma ST50 Panasonic for around 2 grand. I can't imagine a China brand being any better value.
agisthos Posted October 18, 2012 Posted October 18, 2012 (edited) The issue to know about TV manufacturing, is that there are only 4 big manufacturers of LCD panels in the world, Samsung being one of them, and they supply all the hundreds of small TV manufacturers. So just because a no-name brand uses 'Samsung Panels' does not in the slightest mean the product will be any good. Brands like Kogan advertise this fact to make it seem you are getting a real Samsung product without the label. Chinese made products will be as good or bad as the manufacturer making them. Most of Sony's high end product manufacturing is now done in China. Almost all Apple products are. Edited October 18, 2012 by agisthos
Silent Screamer Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 (edited) I actually own a Kogan 55" 3D TV and I would rate it as "take it or leave it". The picture quality is pretty ordinary for fast action sport, but then again so was the price, so cant grumble. Really is a case of you get what you pay for... If you are looking for a temporary large 3D TV until something better turns up or you go projector then go for it, but if your looking for long term ownership then I recomend saving you money for something better. unclemack Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 (edited) Had a customer come in today looking for a Blu-Ray player. I asked him what TV he had and he told me Kogan. I said nothing but then he piped up and told me it's a Samsung... I bit my tongue. Cheers M Edited October 20, 2012 by unclemack
Probbo Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 Kogan using Samsung panels reminds me of the marketing line that SSangYong used to use on one of their 4x4s..........it's a Mercedes engine !..............except Mercedes had stopped using that technology 20 years previously. No problem with this model as long as people undersstand what they are putting their money into.

Hifiplus Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 It probably is a Samsung as they are one of only a handful of manufacturers, It really depends on which series you are buying, if you compare Samsungs they state if they are series 8,7, 6 etc. the older the series the cheaper they are.
