Sony BDP S-790 owners' thread

Thought I start this and find out how many of you Bros are using this excellent BDP which is a class above others in terms of PQ.  Not only in BR upscaling, streaming from other source is also exceptional, a cut above others as well.  My MKV files never looked this sharp and clean.  Objects around the edges are smooth and the background dynamic and contrasty.  Couple these with clear and dynamic SQ, at $400 in HKG, this is a genuine steal.  No association with Sony, BTW... :)

But what are the stuff that I feel should have been better!... :P

1.  Light and plasticky looking.  Doesn't feel and look like a hi-end machine.

2.  Doesn't play Flac files.

3.  2 x HDMI outputs too close to each other.

The big question is how good is it when compared to the Oppo 93 or 95 only in terms of PQ? I always find bluray Sony PQ is always better than even Oppo. I may not have adjusted the Oppo 83 to optimum though. ???

To my eyes, the Sony beats both the 93 and 95 in background dynamics.  It's slightly cleaner and focus.  You won't go wrong with this BDP in the PQ department, especially when upscaling DVDs, it reign supreme!

So, for better PQ than oppo, other than this sony, is the Panasonic DMP-BDT500 another strong contender?

 

Any denon models to consider, especially when I have the denon 4311 receiver with denon link?

That's what I felt too. DVD has not compared though.

Just got it but haven't tried it out yet.  Was quoted HKD2360 by Broadway when I checked last Sunday but they don't have stock.

No, all the sets are not BR region free!  Alamak, no way an upscaled DVD can look good on a big screen :P

 

But on TVs, it beats the competitors hands down! :)

just got mine from wisma yesterday. they have promotion now for mysony club members. it is at 299. i was not a member but i asked and spoke with sales guy (john gregorio) and he gave it to me at 299 itself instead of the 499 price. Promotion is only till 10 or 12 september.

 

any idea if i dont have the region free firmware how or where can i get it from?

Any idea where to get the region free FW from if your set does not already have it? Also how do you figure out if it is region free outside of trying different region DVDs and Blurays. Anyway to make out from the FW version and code?
