Bugs Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 Looking for some bookshelvers that have a clean and punchy sound .I'm running a Marantz CD 80 through a Audio -gd NFB -10SE DAC .I have a pair of Vifa 10 inch for the bottom end duties.I use Yamaha amps. The reviews are good, but it seems cheap for Dynaudios. Blues,Rock and Jazz are listened to so they have to be a bit versatile .Any opinons, thanks in advance....Bugs ,
DoggieHowser Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 It's not as refined as the Focus but has the Dynaudio house sound. Great punchy bass and articulate highs.
pete_mac Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 Very very good for the money. I had a pair and I miss them. Decky now owns them and has modded the crossovers for improved clarity. I always found them to sound very full at low volume levels compared to most other bookshelf speakers too.
Bugs Posted May 2, 2012 Author Posted May 2, 2012 OK, thanks for the replies, the Dynaudios look like the go for me, just when I was ready to make the plunge I spied a pair of DM/28's on Ebay,......hmmmm, new 2/7 for around $1100 or 2/8 for $850 starting price, RRP is $1600, apparently. Thoughts please.....Thanks in advance...Bugs
DoggieHowser Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 I need to go back to the showroom again but I remember there was a sweet spot for the DMs From memory (and I may be wrong here), the 2/8 might have had too large a bass driver. That made the bass lower but I thought it didn't seem as seamless in the integration with the tweeter. Hold on, let me consult my Dynaudio guru.
DoggieHowser Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 OK back from MSN. He said the DM2 range has been discontinued, but DM2/6 and DM2/7 were ideal. But not the 2/8 Hope this helps.
Krispy Audio Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 If you can stretch, I find the Excite range to be the go. It's just a $200 difference to the X12, imo worth every cent.
DoggieHowser Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 Actually if you don't yet have amps, the new Xeo is the one I'd go for. I feel the active design of the Xeo sounds better than the Excite on which it is based on + amplification of equivalent pricing.
madamesimplifi Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 Quite interested to hear what CP has to say about the Xeo and where they sit in the range. The active and wireless feature is very appealing.
Krispy Audio Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 (edited) The Xeo3 is supposed to be an Excite X12 with an amp. From my listening I believe they've tweaked the X12 a litte though, even if only in the crossover design. The amount of bass they can produce is phenomenal. Dyn are renowned for their bass ability as it is, but to date I haven't heard such low frequencies from such a small driver/cabinet design. It's a good solution, but you pay $1k for the amp ($2.5k all up for the Xeo3), and although wireless, you still need a power point for each speaker. So you need to weigh it up. For someone after a neat and convenient solution I believe they're excellent. I woudn't be surprised if we see another range of actives from Dyn, perhaps based on a new Contour design. Purely speculation though! Edited May 3, 2012 by CP_
DoggieHowser Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 I thought the Xeo5 was pretty amazing, and was getting awfully close to some of the Focus in terms of bass response. But the Focus does have a much sweeter tweeter.
