Prometheus - the beginning of Aliens.... June 2012 by Ridley Scott again

Recommended Posts

Ya man!! Ridley's director's cuts of movies like Alien, Gladiator, Bladerunner, Kingdom of Heaven become a whole new diff (always better, in fact) film

I much prefer the original theatrical cut on bladerunner.

Happier ending, and Deckard's narration as the replicant, Roy dies.

They are different cuts, both valid.  I've never been one for the bandwagon that insists the BR FC is better than the TC; the critique is usually levelled at Ford's narration, but it works for me.  BR isn't the easiest movie to follow, the narration helps, and since BR was always intended as sci-fi film noir, noir films have usually (always?) had the hero giving a narration.  Even the complaint that Ford was contractually forced to do the narration in post-production, hence the incredibly tired, weary tone of the narration, works to the film's advantage IMHO.

And never mind the whole "Decker is a replicant" nonsense.  That entirely defeats the initial idea in BR, highlighting the difference between humans and replicants, the human spirit.  Of all the changes, that's the one I abhor.  But having said that, the FC is still watchable.  Just think of it as two different adaptations of the same book, then.

Curiously, the Alien DC doesn't change very much anyway.  (As contrasted to the sort-of DC of Alien 3, which is vastly improved, even if the cut isn't technically a DC since it wasn't approved by Fincher.)

I'm surprised there is no comment from lonewolf, one of our resident movie reviewers in this forum...love the way he give movie reviews...dissecting and then putting it back all again.

Thanks for the compliments but the reason why there was no comments from me was that I only caught the show today.

Frankly there really isn't much to say about the movie that has not already been said. And while I did not approach this show as an Alien prequel (heck I dun even remember the Space Jockey scene everyone keeps talking about), or has any sky-high expectations for the show, it was not very good.

The plot was clumsy. The writings were lazy. The characters were forgettable. There's not a memorable action scene to speak about. Most of all, the chill factor is just not there. (I blame JC for turning the aliens into 'just another movie monster'). So despite all the loud sounds and bright light, this is a souless movie. Nothing worth writing about. Except maybe the set designs.

I finally caught Prometheus tonight. I really thought it would be more monumental than this.

I agree the characters just arent as fleshed out as i liked and the motivation for the characters not particularly clear.

ps I recall seeing an old trailer where a character in the movie said that the signs on the prehistoric drawings were not an invitation but a warning to stay away. I don't recall it being in the final movie nor would it have fit in the storyline.

The other thing that I still can't quite understand is the prologue with the dying Engineer. I guess it just leaves many doors and opportunities open.

ps as to the craft found in the first Alien, it is very possible that some ships of the facility did manage to escape the planet. After all, David claimed they were other ships still in the facility.

Believe it was meant to show the 'beginning' of human life on earth.  Begs the question of the relationship between humans and the engineers.

If the engineer's DNA created the humans and life on earth and the other ETs left the planet, why would the cavemen paintings depict the aliens living among them?

I know I said I won't whack the Blu-ray but I saw the 3D cover and love it. When it came down to US$19.99 I went for it.

I gotta say a second viewing didn't sway too much from my initial impression. But after I listened to Ridley Scott's commentary (most of it) and the 37min of alternate and deleted scenes, I find myself clearer of what Ridley was trying to achieve. Some of the deleted scenes are really superb. Like the creation scene in the beginning and an extended climatic fight scene between Shaw and the Engineer. I also like the scene where David explained what the Engineer said and also the scene where Weyland talk to the Engineer.  In the end I mostly agree with why Ridley took em out or re-edited to make the film more ambiguous. I have a feeling if the 'clearer' scenes are in the movie, i would have hated it more.  But then again a good movie should make me question more.  Maybe it's just me becoz I have a pal who loves it and questions the questions.  The Weyland files special feature was cool too, especially the Ted Conference, featuring a young Guy Pearce.

I just wish they did something about that rolling squashing croissant scene. So many experienced brains and none saw how stupid it was?  Maybe everyone scared to offend somebody else

I quite liked the movie- only caught it last week. I haven't watched the direct it's cut but most if the imagery and scenes were fairly clear in what they were depicting (I hadn't watched any reviews except to know that most people thought it was a bad film- maybe that's the key :) ).

I think if it was more spelled out that would be a bit lousy too.

I did think it wasn't scary enough- coming from me that's quite something as I scare easily :D

Have u read this by the way? V amusing:

Well the score is still scary... about 70% the impact of the score of Jaws, which is the all time best in terms of impact and ease of remembering the show just from three repeating notes.

Just enjoy the solid sound effects and the good deal on the disc.. who knows it might be $10 next time.. ;)

Noomi Rapace getting in and out of trouble again!

amazing role for her this one after have only thought of her in the girl who played with fire, girl with dragon tattoo etc..

am amazed in the who cast for this one really ...

likes of Michael Fassbender, charlize theron, Idris Elba and such ...

Fassbender was particularly good... from his role of David that goes from Lawrence of arabia style to

like the Lawrence quote ... which is pretty apt to his role...

"The trick is not minding that it hurts..."

good article on more of these parallels...
