Pingu1624705792 Posted December 24, 2007 Posted December 24, 2007 I have been having the 40G PS3 for the past 2 weeks and I'm absolutely bowled over by the machine. I bought it as a BR player but just to experience gaming I bought the Winning Eleven package. Now I'm also hooked to it! I don't have a HDMI equipped receiver so the new high def sound is out for me. But the video image on my Panny PV70 42 is absolutely fabulous. What's more, I've been able to download all my family holiday photos and some video clips as well. The machine is truly versatile! I would readily award it the best device award for 2007. BUT as a BR player it does have one very noticeable failing - it is very noisy! So I can understand why many who have been there done that are still looking for the best standalone BR player availble. But for those who are waiting to make the first step into high def, you will not regret buying a PS3. I'm pretty sure a competively priced complete BR player is quite some time away. By then you can always retire the PS3 into the kids room. Btw, on the noise issue I did spend tonight watching Spiderman 3 with the tray holding the PS3 pulled out half way for better ventilation. And the machine was noticeably quieter. Then again perhaps the movie was too noisy... Got to test this again tomorrow. Merry Christmas everyone!
ekardo Posted December 25, 2007 Posted December 25, 2007 add me for Winning Eleven challenge?? ekarmoto... :P anyway, PS3 is quiet, unless it's super hot and it needs to activate the fan for full speed.. I accidentally close the cabinet door and it became a sauna inside..haha..
DizzyD1624705734 Posted December 25, 2007 Posted December 25, 2007 hi Merry Christmas everyone..W11 is good fun as I spent my xmas eve playing into the night but I have connection problems into the network. Does you all experience this DNS error? I am using a linksys router and have experienced on and off issues with connection to the net. regards

So you can put all your photos and videos in a central location and use the PS3 as a media client. It even supports 1080p Hi-def video from the new camcorders like my Canon HV-20. I just download those huge files from the camcorder to the media server and can watch them any time.
ekardo Posted December 25, 2007 Posted December 25, 2007 PS3 have known issue with WEP or WPA.... try disabling them and use MAC Address Filtering only. it worked for me, but I fall back on my Wired Lan..

Hi I am not well versed in this. Do you mean to change the security settings on the linksys router to MAC address filtering ony? Will this compromise the security protection of my network? Thanks

I'm anything but computer savvy, so I'ma waiting for someone to come and connect my D-Link router to the PS3 wirelessly. So surfing the net on my Panny with the PS3 is yet something I'm looking forward to... As for the media client thing I suppose that has to wait awhile longer. Like I said, this is a truly versatile machine. Now I wish I had bought the 80G instead...
congsterz Posted December 25, 2007 Posted December 25, 2007 ive tried hooking up my pc to the tv to watch hi def videos before... the video was good but i cant comprehend the urge to surf the web using the tv? because i think one would also like to have at least a keyboard and mouse for full internet usage?

Thanks yes...but at least, you still have MAC Address filtering...meaning those Device not registered in your router will not get access one.. with WPA or WEP, it's additional 1 more gate of security...

Just pluck 'em usb keyboards n mouse and u are good to go :) one can go to youtube or other 'free' movie sites to watch low resolution stuff. but it was pretty ugly when i zoomed it up.
luq_skywalker Posted December 25, 2007 Posted December 25, 2007 Hey guys, anybody tried playing WE 2008 via network over wireless ? I tried these few days but there seems to be quite abit of lag (missing frames) whenever the opponent has the ball ? is it due to my internet connection speed ( singnet's 3mbps) or is it due to the wireless setup. ???

The connection here in HK is fine for the one game I played online...Kenna thrashed 8-1 Btw off topic...Is there outside party bluetooth remote controller for PS3 Blu Ray playback? thks
ekardo Posted December 25, 2007 Posted December 25, 2007 yeah...quite a few...check amazon.com I think have to use SG vs SG for lag free, but I haven't found someone in singapore to challenge yet. always have someone in HK or Japan, and no matter I host or they host, I get the lag...and trashing...super disgusting..
luq_skywalker Posted December 26, 2007 Posted December 26, 2007 hey ekardo .. add me to ur list .. we can play together next time u r online. My nick is luq_skywalker. Everyone here can add me as their fren too. Yeah i agree wih u, it's super disgusting. I managed to beat one player though. the trick is to not let them have control. coz when they do have control, all sorts of 'magic' appears.
ekardo Posted December 26, 2007 Posted December 26, 2007 a bit too late.. I sold it off today before the value of this game goes rock bottom with the release of WE2009...I am sure it will be out soon.. anyway, its still a good bluray player.. watch Resident Evil and Ratatouille....
Pingu1624705792 Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 ...and I managed to hook up the PS3 wirelessly to the internet last night all by myself. Really pleased with myself! But the surfing is reaally slow. Can't imagine playing games online...
ekardo Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 surfing slow might be due to your connection prob... since downloading from PSN network is pretty fast for me...but winning eleven online gaming is disappointing..(is it because of Starhub capped in uploading speed?)
ekardo Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 watched 2 US release Bluray, but surprisingly, I can't get the 2 movie to show full, showing black bar below and above... how come I can't get PS3 to display in full like what I normally did to the AVI files??
Guest jonlee Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 because the movie is in 1.85:1 or 2.35:1 ratio, just like what it will be at the cinema. DanDon Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 I had been deciding between PS3 & BD-P1400 very hard and finally bought the 40GB PS3 today together with WE 2008. Really enjoyed playing the WE and my daughter (coming to 4 yrs old soon) also fighting for the controller to play. ;D For DVD/BR playback, is there a way I can use the wireless controller to do jobs like selecting subtitles, fast forward/backward, stop, pause, etc., or I should get a remote control?
redders Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 Yes press triangle button when your movie plays, then navigate with your direction buttons to checkup what each icon does.
laialpha Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 But I think it is more intuitive to use the remote.
