Craigandkim Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Hopefully Universal will do a proper job: Article JB HiFi
Kamikazi Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Hopefully. Only if it's done by someone who cares about the music. Have not been greatly impressed with some "ReMasters".
ArthurDent Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Yes hopefully for the later titles they'll be an improvement on the Oz pressed disks, but they'd have to do a lot right to beat the West German Polygram pressings of Shabooh Shoobah and The Swing.

Hence why I'll buy one title and compare it to my original releases (WG Polygram) before buying anymore. PS: Just purchased "The Swing" - I'll post a waveform when I get it to highlight any atrocities compared to the original. Edited June 3, 2011 by Craigandkim
dack Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 (edited) i bought Listen Like Thieves today and it's very nicely done. I asked if they had the boxset and they looked at me like i was retarded so i just got the one. I only have the original vinyl to compare it to but, from what I've heard, the remaster is much cleaner sounding than the vinyl, which sounds veiled to me. sorry, no waveforms to report as I don't give a rat's **** about them. But I was able to sit though the whole CD quite comfortably without any worries. I think they got this one right. how is 'The Swing'? It's the same team that mastered the Beatles CDs, right? Sounds promising, haven't got The Swing yet, but will post when received.
Bunyip Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Hey Craig, has your copy of Swing arrived yet? Would be keen to hear your impressions.
Craigandkim Posted June 20, 2011 Author Posted June 20, 2011 Just got it..I'll have a listen tonight and post the waveform comparisons
Craigandkim Posted June 20, 2011 Author Posted June 20, 2011 (edited) As promised, I have given the 2011 remaster and the original West German release a couple of rigorous comparisons (of particular tracks) both through the Presonus Audiobox via cans on the PC and also via the DV-60 through my main system speakers. The first impressions- heavier bass line and ramped volume. There is good vocal and instrument separation. Remastered by Giovanni Scatola As Dack mentioned it is listenable but then again it could have been better dynamically, possibly with limiting the compression. You can clearly see where the peaks have been limited (follow that straight red line). The volume has been raised at least 7db compared to the original release. Is it worth buying the remastered version over the original WG release? No, I wont be buying anymore, I'll keep my originals. Glad this one only cost me $8.75. ps: If you did not notice the file name this comparison is of Original Sin Edited June 20, 2011 by Craigandkim ps
Bunyip Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Great - thanks for that. Wow, that chart on the left really tells the story. But if it has good separation, then all is not bad. I don't own a CD version of The Swing, or Shabooh Shoobah, so just need to find a good pressing. Given the choice - would you recommend I try hunt down an older pressing (if so, what label and what year?) or just go with these new ones? Thanks for your help Craig.
Craigandkim Posted June 20, 2011 Author Posted June 20, 2011 Hello Bunyip, just depends on your perception of value for money... remasters here (because they're cheap). I noticed Ken does not rate the Aussie releases (Disctronics I presume-cannot comment, as mine are the WG releases I purchased in the early 80's). The original pressings below: Targets: INXS The Swing (West Germany, ATCO, catalog number 7 90160-2, INXS Shabooh Shoobah (West Germany, ATCO, catalog number 7 90072-2) Non-targets: INXS The Swing (West Germany, Mercury, catalog number 818 553-2) INXS Shabooh Shoobah (France, Mercury, catalog number 812 084-2) Cheers
Bunyip Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Thanks mate, great research. I'm really just looking for good quality sound, and if I find a decent older pressing for a reasonable price, il go for that. You've helped me. I saw the remasters on cdwow the other day for around eleven bucks so will probably get them from there. Unless you're willing to sell me your West Germans.
