My humble little system

Featured Replies

I moved house in April, so have been moving into a new room. I had to lose my big speakers as the room is small.  I have a small amount of acoustic treatment. Here are some photos.

Details, please?

The racks look like the UK Isoblue. What are they?

The racks are home made, based on Isoblue.

The equipment is :

Arcam Alpha cd player ( nos and modified )

XTC preamp

Orelle sa100 evo amp;

Orelle Orator speakers;

interconnects are xtc, speaker cables are VDH Revelation.

A comfortable room.  You pay attention to set up.  That's the key to good sound.  I see the cats get a look in as well :D  I'm waiting for someone to say "where's the turntable?"  ?

Here are a few more photos. A close up of the speakers,  then  electronics, and the crossover.

Thanks for your kind words. I didn't  notice  the  cat until you said, well spotted.

There's nothing humble about this system. And it took a few looks before I spotted the cat. I will put a few words down in the next couple of days after hearing it. I shall say no more.....

Cat is not spotted. It's a blue (and looks like a fine companion for the household).

Thanks Blake, it was nice to have you over.

It is a humble system, in that it is worth almost nothing, is very old, and is very simple.

That doesn't mean it sounds very ordinary.

Yeah I totally agree. It shocked me actually how much you have managed to get out of it for what it is. It kind of makes some of us who spend big dollars on gear look a little misguided.

The more I venture into this hobby the more I see just how complicated it can be and how many factors can change things. The hole gets deeper yeat again.

Yes mate thanks for your hospitality. It was certainly an eye opener for me, very enjoyable. And as a bonus I think you've broadened my appreciation for a few different genre's of music.

I swapped my room orientation from across to firing down the room, some months ago, installed my 150W (semi DIY) power amp, and have been playing with the room acoustics. Here are some photos taken today:

My system is down, my speakers are gone, and my room is a mess!

I am using the lockdown to finish a project that I started years ago: my partial open baffle speaker system.

The idea being to have a high efficiency speaker based around the Supravox 215 widebander in an open baffle, supported by a sealed 15" bass and a helper tweeter.

The speakers were built many years ago, but I did not complete the crossovers.

The drivers are listed below:

The Wolf Von Langa A150 15" bass field coil

The Supravox 215 EXC field coil wide bander

215 EXC Haut-parleur large bande 20W / 90 à 99dB / 4Ω - Supravox

The Seas Exotic T35 tweeter:

The bass is in a sealed and brace 130 litre cabinet, while the Supravox and tweeter are mounted on a baffle - more pics to follow.

I have been using omnimic to do measurements, and Xsim to model the crossover.

I have then been listening to the one speaker, adjusting the crossover then remodeling.

here is the crossover schematic snapshot from Xsim (S1 tweeter, S2 Widebander, S3 Bass)

I will post more pictures as I progress

I just woke up, read the first lines and thought you'd been robbed ? Sounds like an exciting 'covid' project. You didn't sell those sweet little speakers????

Hi Blakey,

The little guys are packed away. I needed something to stop me going mad. Finishing a speaker project seemed like good therapy.

Great stuff. I'm rebuilding/rewiring my Pro-ject rpm5.1 tt. That should keep me out of trouble for a while ?
