it's time for me for an upgrade

looking at upgrading my main fronts. i have been demo-ing opus 1 and mission m66i and m35i. mistake i made was when i demoed the opus, i brought my own cd and i can tell that it is definitely a step up (or two) from my 9.6. but when i demoed the mission, i didn't have my own cd, so it was playing something rather different and a movie, superman returns.

the opus have similar charateristics with my 9.6 (better of course) but i found something new with the missions. the m66i wa very fine and detail as well as accurate for music but the low-end/freq is a bit on the light side of it. with m35i, i found it very bassy (in fact a bit too much bass to my liking) with slight less accurate. the place i went for missions demo, the owner/manager recommends me the m66i but the other guy recommends me the m35i. i do actually quite like the mission m66i, i think they're fine speakers for music but the bass is very very light and i don't like having to use the sub when i'm listening to music. i like to listen to all sort of musics apart from classical/opera, metal, and hard rock. some of my favorites are dido, the eagles, eric clapton, the corrs, kenny g, norah jones, richard marx.

asked the guy if there's anything in between m66i and m35i, he said nothing in between.

i might go back next week to the 'missions' place and play my own cd and go the 'opus' place and play the same movie, superman returns.

comments ? suggestions ?

cheerrrsssss :)

btw, the place that sells the missions also sells wharfedales, opus including. but they swear by the missions and they don't seem to like the opus at all, even the owner/manager doesn't seem too impressed either by the opus.

Me too. I like country and western.

Possibly related to commercial aspects more than sound quality? Just seems odd given the amount of good press and favourable impressions forum members have regarding the Opus line.

It doesn't matter what they think, it matters what you think. Trust your ears and you can't go wrong.

To correct it slightly " We like both kinds of music here. Country, and western." from "The Blues Brothers" movie.

So that's where it came from. Thanks rogger.

Haven't seen the Blues Brothers movie for years. Love seeing Ray and Aretha in there, plus of course Duck Dunn on bass.

Country and Western were actually different branches of the country music tree for many years. So the joke actually would make sense to a pure country afficianado.... :P

Bob Wills played Western Swing and it was actually not that much like popular Country of the time as played by acts like The Carter Family.

Apologies for the thread crapping.

My money would be on the Opusessssssssssssss

Yeah, and Steve Cropper, the quintessential soul guitarist.

And let's not forget James Brown, may he rest in peace..... and John Lee Hooker and Walter Horton, peace be upon him. :):):)

LOVED that movie when it came out. It changed my life. Helped a lot of non-blues fans into buying a few blues albums...... pity the 2000 movie was soooooo dreadful!:o:(

I bought the M35is - but only compared them with the Energys (at PM's) so can't help you with M66 comparison nor Opus.

The M35s, for me at least, seem to suit orchestral, jazz, non-rock etc; the Energys were very tight-and-punchy (ultra-cool) with their bass which might suit rock/hop-hip. The M35s positively boom with Madonna Confessions- quite ugly indeed but I haven't yet plugged the foams in and our room as yet has no furniture, carpet (or plants!) and a bare concrete floor..lol.

Yet let them (M35is) loose with Verdi's Requiem and I am transported into a cathedral - awesome, powerful, utterly thrilling. My old Leak 2030s just gave out a muddy wash of noise in comparsion.

Let us know how your CD tested out.

thanks for that mate

also, anyone here has opinion on PSB Image T65 speakers ? just had a look at them in the weekend at axent and they sounded pretty good.

Forget the cheaper missions if your comparing them with the 6x series and Opus.

While the Mission M3x series are great at their price, the M6x series are just that much more controlled and sweeter sounding. Pick up the cabinets and you will know why. Personally I prefer the Mission sound over the wharfies, but you may prefer the opposite. Take a handfull of your favorite CD's into the store, get them to give you a listening room with a similar amp / receiver to what your using ( I hope you have something in the $1500+ range if its a receiver to be looking at those speakers - they deserve it - probably closer to about $2.5K ) and get them to let you have a free reign with the speakers your interested in. then you get to make the choice.

Of course, a good hi end dealer will let you home demo them :P

And Brookvale - stick those bungs in ASAP, move the speakers out from the side /rear walls, and see how they sound, My experience with them ( my brother has some ) was pretty positive in the bass department to be honest, so I would think its the room your in.

Will do for sure - the speakers are still standing in their poly packing bases and the bags are on as covers to keep dust off while renovations are being finished off - lol - couldn't wait to try them out, so bags get lifted then put back... Cork tiles, furniture, curtains etc still to be put in/up. Approval now given for discrete cable trays to be stuck in to keep cabling neat around edge of room. Hey ho for the big renovation-completion shindig!

I haven't heard those Missions, but I'd put the Wharfedales up with the Elegante E83 (which I have heard) rather than the lower priced range. They comfortably replaced my $4g Castle Harlech S2's, which kind of astonished me to tell the truth. Still, just as some people see Ferrari's as cramped and short on luggage space, the Opus 1's won't appeal to everybody. Take a test drive!! ;)

Personally I have about the opposite view to ilikecrumpets, I feel that the M3 series are just tad above the Diamonds, the M6 a step up from the Opus range, and that the E8 series are fantastic speakers at that price point, but of course, different speakers will work differently in different rooms with different amplification and with different ears listening. Lots of variables there.

hi guys

just wanna keep you all updated. i've made a purchase on a new pair of main speakers. i'm a proud owner of a pair of Paradigm Reference Studio 60 now, after some intense listening from all the speakers questioned. found these studio 60 at a dealer in the shore and they are very nice speakers to MY ears and liking. had to pay way more than what i was going to pay for the opus, but i'm very satisfied with them. in the broken-in period now, 2nd day and they already started to open up a bit.

i was going to get a complete set of fronts and center of either opus or m66i range but now i can't afford the center. will have to stick with my diamond 9 CM for mean time until i can afford the studio center speaker. i might have to get my energy reference connoseur center speaker out from the storage to try to match these puppies.

again, thanks again for the valuable inputs. :)

Those studio 60's are nice speakers, to my ears their the best of the Studio range - the larger speakers are just too expensive for the sound quality they deliver, but the 60's are great at a good price.

I just hope your amplification is up to the job!

Yes, the Studio 60's are the pick of Paradigm's range, and great all rounders.

Happy listening.

Quick question - which shop was it? I'm having trouble finding shops with similar ranges (price ranges) to Paul Money to see other speakers :/

I see this was quite a while ago - how do you feel about the M66i's now?

wow... this is an old old thread ! :) i think the only shop you can listen to these range, missions m3* series and m6* series as well as wharfedale diamond, evo and opus are paul money and north shore auto sound.

in north shore auto sound, they also carry some paradigm speakers, including the studio reference series.

i have had a few opportunities to listen to m66i after my purchase and very happy that i went ahead with my paradigm studio 60s.
