Beyer' DT880... yummy

Featured Replies

Well right now my favourite piece of audio hardware are my Beyerdynamic DT880 headphones. They were a blind second-hand internet purchase, and boy do they sound great! The bass is really realistic - not too fat and not too thin either - and it goes right down to the 20s. The midrange is really smooth and clear, just how I like it. The only weak point is that without EQ the treble is a bit strong with a bit of sibilance. I only use them on the computer, so they're always EQ'd anyway.

Because they are 250 ohms, I think that they're a much easier load on the sound card than other generic 32-ohm 'phones that I've had. The sound card doesn't make anymore "pop" sounds at the start of loud low-bass tones, and it goes more than loud enough for my needs. However, the sound card is definitely the weaker part of the system, and right now I think that the treble could be a lot clearer with a reasonable DAC + headphone-amp. One of these days I'll build a headphone amp with a combination of frequency-dependent current control and voltage control - it's just what all open headphones need!
