Rega Planet 2003

Featured Replies

Hi all .

I had a conversation with the Rega Offices today. Since they are located in Uk , it was no problem for me to get in touch with them. The reason i phone them up was due to a contradiction between what some Hifi mags said and what my local dealer .

My dealer insisted that there is No Planet 3 , just a revised version of the 2, only cosmetically. So i phone up REga and and they said something like: not very pleased with the info some mags presented that there is a new model ..., this is the rega planet 2 with some cosmetic mods... , the electronic improvements were made months ago upon the Rega Planet 2 and the new stock has only cosmetic changes.

In other words if you bought a Rega some months ago , you do have the same machine as the new ones with some differences in looks.

There has been a lot of confusion over this.

I was initially told by the Rega distributor that the latest Planet had similar internal changes to that of the latest Jupiter, as that is what he believed.

Later it transpires that the new Planet has some cosmetic changes and a new lid.

No matter what: the old and new Planets do sound different, with the newer model improving on the performance of the old.

I managed to directly compare the two.. Having done so, I would buy the new one in favour of the Planet 2000.

Anybody know exactly what those cosmetical diffrences are??

Ok. The reason for asking is beacuse I was considering buing one a few months ago but was put off by the lack of build quality to the lid and also on the vobbly 'puck' that clamps the CD. Maybe this has been improved?

..by the way Spiros, I understand by your first posting that you have a Planet?? What I experienced when listening to one is that it had problems playing copyrighted CD's. Is this something that you've experienced?

Oh, and to "amend" my first comments. The Rega (which my brother phoned for his 2000 didn't sound that convicing that the new model is only improved on the outside....

Are Rega saying anything about the non-cosmetic internal changes and why they might be an improvement on the original or is it a trade secret? Most of Rega's engineering over the years has been honest and reasonably priced so I can't see why they would start getting mysterious about any of this.

However, I wish the buggers would finally admit their mistake in not including VTA adjustment on thier otherwise great LP arms.

Ayn, the "new" Rega Planet I reviewed had merely a changed lid. I'm told that there may be another new Planet coming out with some internal changes.

No problem with Rega cartridges on Rega turntables!

Sure, but why settle for thier less than musical cartridges and the soggy bottom end of their cheaper tables. I'm talking as a one time Rega TT/RB300/Elys owner?

Audioenz , don't you think these two comments contradict each other ??

Not at all. I was able to compare the new and older Rega Planets. They did sound different, with the newer model being the better performer.

According to Rega, the only change is in the lid.
