Favourite album is hard to pin down, but Everybody Knows this is Knowhere and Tonight's the Night are hard to beat.

Least favourite album: his 80s output in general.

Favourite song: God! That's hard, given that his songs formed the soundtrack to my life from age 13 to 40-something. In the early seventies it would have been Old Laughing Lady and Down by the River, in the mid seventies New Mama and Dangerbird, then Like a Hurricane, then Pocohontas and Powderfinger. For me the later stuff never matched the quality of those songs, sadly.

Songs. I don't believe 'Mr Soul' has been mentioned yet so I had better chuck it in the mix. Many great rockin' live versions and a lovely acoustic version on 'Unplugged' as well of course the sublime original with Buffalo Springfield.

The closer of the movie 'Heart of Gold' with that version of 'Old laughing lady' is just spine tingling as well. I shed a tear at the old Sawtell cinema when I first heard it. Not the only tear I've shed over a Neil song live or recorded I don't mind admitting.

And 'Down by the River' still moves me after hearing at a billion times.

But if I'm only allowed one song I'd have to choose 'Motion Pictures'.

Albums. 'On the Beach' was my favourite for years but if I had to pick one album to take with me to that deserted island I'd probably need to take 'Tonight's the Night'.

Least favourite. I aways struggled with the whole 'Trans', 'Everybody's Rockin' , 'Landing on Water' and 'Life' era but all those albums have hidden gems with some filler. 'Sample and Hold' from Trans is one of those and there is a sublime live version of it on one of those unauthorised Cd's that were doing the rounds way back when.

This is a hard one. When an artist writes and performs with such passion, so consistently.

There's a Neil Young album and/or song for every occasion. He never has "writers block", whatever he's going through at the time - it just comes out in the next record. Tonight's the Night and Re.ac.tor are the best 2 examples that spring to mind.

"Comes a time" is one of my very favorites - All great songs, great instrumention and what a list of personnel!

"Rust Never Sleeps" - One of my desert island disks. "Like a hurricane" is my highlight on that album.

"Re.ac.tor" really grew on me. I have to play this when everyone else is out coz it has to be real loud - especially "Motor City" and "Shots".

"On the Beach" and " Zuma" get a regular spin.

And I could go on and on and on.....

Soooo glad we caught him at the Big Day Out a couple of years ago.

Like A Hurricane is not on Rust Never Sleeps. It appears on Live Rust, and a few other albums, and maybe that's what you were referring to?

And originally released on the American Stars 'N Bars album. Great song though. :)

Yes of course. I had Rust Never Sleeps on vinyl and Live Rust on cassette (back before CDs existed) because I wanted to have it in the car all the time.

When we got our first DVD player, Live Rust was one of the 1st DVDs I bought.

HI Soundfan.

I found the source of my confusion.

The concert film is titled "Rust Never Sleeps" and the track listing on the film consists of all the tracks on the "Live Rust" album plus Thrasher and Welfare Mothers from the "Rust Never Sleeps" album.

The VHS and DVD releases of the film are therefore also titled "Rust Never Sleeps". By the way, the DVD has a great dts 5.1 soundtrack.

Fair enough. Disregard my comments. :P

Reactor is a VERY underrated album IMHO !

'Rust Never Sleeps' and 'Live Rust' are too similar ! (obviously there is a single album and a double album), but can't go past the double 'live' album.(and the DVD)!

I think a good thread could be "what's your most favorite 'more obscure' Neil Young album"?

Some that would be in the mix for me would be, 'Times Fade Away' , 'Greendale' , 'This Note's For You' and 'Reactor'.

One of the great and more obscure Neil albums is Broken Arrow with the Horse from 96. The album has a great groove and is a grower - don't expect this one to grab you right away but when it does the reward is great. It also contains what is IMO one of Neil's greatest ever acoustic ballads - Music Arcade! If you've not heard that song, find it on You Tube right now, an incredible song, the only acoustic song on the album, the rest is all Horse. They did this album to pay homage to David Briggs who died in 95.

Yeh, I got that album when it came out and was pleasantly surprised, and no one ever seems to mention it!

An old thread I know....

I was just listening to “On the Beach” this morning. What a brilliant album!

I’m embarrassed to admit that I’d never heard it before
