barn door Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 Hi guys, hoping for some guidance on a vintage turntable. My father-in-law dropped off his 40 year old Pioneer PL-L1000A turntable at my place just to check everything is still in working order (after a decade in storage). As it was a wedding present, he has cared for it meticulously (original box, instructions, accessories). Question . . . Are these turntables well regarded? Entry level? Or high end in their day? Reason being, it might need some money spent on it, and would like to know if it’s going to be an investment, or more for nostalgic reasons. Cheers all.
metal beat Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 (edited) Hi Barn Door They are pretty good turntables and regarded as more high end than entry level - as they were an excellent linear tracking turntable. They generally go for around $1000 or a bit above - although there is one PL-L1000 on sale here at SNA for $3k. As it seems to be working fine, give it a spin. You may only need to spend some $$ on a new cartridge. IMO, its more an investment. Edited October 2, 2018 by metal beat 1

Thinking you’re spot on with cartridge update . . . Don’t think it’s seen a new one in 40 years. 1
