I have just received these pics from Mike Lenahan who had just finished upgrading the standard caps and resistors on our PL amp to Jupiter Copper Foil caps and Jansen Resistors. Unfortunately I am down in NSW for work so apart from listening to it over Mike's mobile in the interim I will have to wait a another week before I am back up in Queensland to hear it in the flesh.

Mike tells me it sounds pretty damn good with the Copper foils fitted which he hasn't fitted to a PL previously, must admit my patience will be really tested having to wait so long before I get a chance to hear it.

These PL amps look very busy under the hood, the Jupiter caps make it even more crowed. It will be interesting hear the differences these changes make.

cheers Terry

It’s pretty alright, hope it’s as good as you expect.

Nicely laid out mate. You have good technical support and a mate in Mike. I've spoken to him once or twice on the phone. Lovely down to earth bloke is he.:thumb:

Very keen for your feedback on how this goes!

Also - what valves are you going to be using in it?

I have been using KT150's for about six months and have also replaced the two centre 12au7's with French made NOS early 60's Radiotechique tubes. I very much liked the sound this combination gave me previously running through our Vienna Acoustic Concert Grand speakers, so only time will tell how these upgrades rate.

Agreed Wimbo, Mike is a top bloke and also just happens to make some very impressive speakers.

Well as of yesterday the amp is finally home with the cap upgrade, so last night I sat down and listened to several favourite cd's through the Oppo 205 and to say I'm impressed would be a understatement.

What did it sound like? Previously I have heard the same music sound quite a bit better in my system but that was not using the Oppo as the source it was when I played it as albums on our Denon dp60l turntable.

I know it's early days and I will do lots more listening before passing final judgement especially given that I finally boxed up the Denon and phono stage and bought them back with me from NSW on Monday so by weekends end I should be able to listen to both two sources through the freshly recapped PrimaLuna.

I was hoping for a decent improvement with this upgrade, didn't exactly know what but had hoped the investment would be worth it. I don't mind admitting I didn't quite expect the kind of improvement I heard last night which was beyond my expectations.  So far I'm rapt.

Great news @TerryO - is it still silent? As in, no background hum/hiss ect?

I have very sensitive speakers and am considering one of these, but need it to be completely silent.

the pictures shown here look exactly like the ones Mike sent to me when he turboed my new Integated hp several months ago. I am thoroughly impressed with it and the set of ML2 reference speakers he sold to me at the same time. I will have to speak to him bout not playing the amp to me over the phone (ha ha) when we go up to pick up some of his interconnects this Friday. His a a thoroughly well versed gentleman and recommend his products to all audiophiles. cheers Peter

Terry,

The amp gets better and better with more hours. I use it with my tuner during the day and fm radio doesn't sound too shabby. The  mods so far are a pair of Gold Lions in the pre amp. I am happy with the EL34  tubes after listening to my mate Warwick's unturboed hp- he tried  KT120 and KT 150 valves (He reverted back to the EL34 valves). The other mod is to make up a small computer fan set up to blow the heat away from the amp as it is mounted in a home made Quadraspire rack (I copied it). Also I had Mike make me up a 3 Hz sprung isolation platform to mount my P8 Rega on. I have wooden floors and had to tip toe around when playing vinyl. The other benefit of the platform is that it isolates any vibes from the room (At higher volumes-6 + some feedback was evident if I  positioned myself in certain parts of the room.

I have turned down  the REL subwoofer as the ML2's have a very good Bass response.

Cheers Peter
