I have a thing for 1980's Mercedes Benz cars.

In 2005 I bought my wife a white 1987 R107 300SL Roadster after she had been trying to get pregnant for the previous 7 years. I reasoned and said to her "If I buy you a convertable it'll have to happen" and luckily it did. We love the car and intend to keep it for ever but with a 3 year old it doesn't get the use it once did.

This love of 80's MB then rolled over to prompt me to find a sedan for her to drive daily. The result was a 1986 W126 420SEL sedan which being the L for extended length gives our boy a nice roomy place to ride in the back seat.

The higher mileage of this sedan has recently made me purchase another one as a long term keeper so I flew to Sydney for this 1989 420SEL which now has the Lorinser wheels [not shown]from my other SEL.

Not exactly a short car!

MB's from this era were made by engineers, not accountants with everything made to last with comfort and style. The SL has 4 pot front calipers and ABS brakes. While both cars have explosive seat belt pre tensioners. The safety of the sedan was a big factor when I bought it. Some of you may remember this advert from the 80's.

The development history is also like no other manufacturer.

My "illness" as my wife now calls it hasn't been cured. As I've said my only problem is buying "her" MB's. When I build my extension on my house I will have room to buy myself an 80's MB. I'm probably going to get something like this.

As the one above is an original MB 560SEC AMG 6.0 [6lt DOHC V8] its super rare in RHD and still very expensive, so I'll probably have to make up a copy.

Beautiful cars! I must confess I have a thing for the 1970's Mercedes SL cars, the ones with the "Pagoda" roof. Sadly, my exposure to 80's Alfa Romeos has killed any desire to own any classic cars these days.

Oh and that bodykitted MB is a monstrosity!

there must be a link between audio types and mercedes from that era . ceto sandoval had a concourse winning sl pagoda top that was a restoration job and peter from audio note has 7 different variations spread over 3 different countries.

The 300SL Roadster will always be a classic.I almost bought one a few years back.If I had the under cover garage space I still may get one, one day...
