Basil,

The ABC is more focussed on pushing iview and live streaming which they have to pay to provide, where as the transmission network is run by Broadcast Australia on a direct payment from the Government.

Remember also the new MD comes from Google management overseas! Their head of technology is also from the IT industry not Electronic engineering.

Unless they just swap ABC24 and ABC1, they will have to face MPEG-4 because there is not enough data rate available.

Who knows when they will ever do anything to improve technical quality.

Well blow me down!

Received this very prompt response from the ABC today.

Good Afternoon Peter,

Thank you for your email.

There are a number of technical, resourcing and audience implications to consider, however the ABC is currently working through its HD plans and hopes to be able to transition its primary channel to high definition Australia wide, before the end of the year.

Unfortunately I don't have more precise information regarding this, however we may have more information in the coming weeks.

Please don’t hesitate to contact the ABC Reception Advice Line, if you have any questions, Mon – Fri on 1300 139 994

Pity that $even does not afford its mushroom audience with an explanation of their stance with HD in their smallest market nationally Sydney,it looks like blur vision for the Melbourne Cup & Aust Open Tennis.

Biggest con dished out by $even was their excuse that the small audiences in Sydney Brisbane & Perth were denied HD on the primary channel due to HD commitments to the VFL

Yeah ; get the impression they don't know whether to go with mpeg2 as mentioned before or 4 if they cared at all .. For even the ABC with their head in the sand screwed up mpeg4 hd news channel to possibly pre-empt them says it all

Remember when Doctor Who got dd5.1 ; ah the good old days when sound mixing meant something ..

Robert,

7's primary channels in Melbourne and Adelaide are in HD on channel 70, where as Brisbane, Sydney and Perth it is 7mate. Considering that there is no AFL until next season why not swap!? Obviously the viewers will get used to their favourite programs as well as the news in HD and won't want to give it up when the AFL restarts!

In Perth they possibly could justify putting the AFL on 7 Mate because it will often clash with their highest rating regular program the news due to the 2 hour time difference, but that does not apply in Sydney and Brisbane!

STW9 Perth has just opened new studios in the CBD and are advertising their HD news. 7 has also replaced their studio into the The West Australian Newspapers site.It is HD as well. We saw the sharp pictures from their local news during the breaks in the Olympics.

If 7 went HD MPEG-4 along with 72 and 7Mate then they could transmit both 7 and 7Mate in HD and still have a legacy channel 70 with 7 programs in SD MPEG-2 for those who cannot receive MPEG-4. Well over 90 % of TVs can receive HD MPEG-2. Very small proportion of viewers watch 72 and 7mate or any other of the secondary channels except ABCKids.

We also need to get SBS to go MPEG-4 and then they can stop downgrading their HD from 1920 to 1440 pixels per line.

CWT,

The AFL put it in their contract with the AFL that they had to transmit the games in HD, obviously they did not specify which channel!

Lastly if and I mean if the ABC makes ABC1 HD using MPEG-4 then this may give the impetus for channels 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 to all go HD?! Good time to do it in a non-rating period.!

Yeah Alanh ; don't care too much about the AFL contract ; more concerned with the low rez from Prime for the tennis as Robert said ..

I wouldn't hold your breath on 7 using mpeg4 for hd ; too concerned with losing those viewers with mpeg2 only receivers as they proposed [was leaked?]1080i mpeg2 a few months ago ..

cwt.... spot on I am surprised they even understand mpeg4 and its benefits again the minority rules with Seven!!

jsmith,

The do not compare channels 73 and 70 in Perth or any other combination of simulcast. The ratings for secondary channels such as 7mate are low. The ratings for 7 Perth lead all other Perth stations. 7Mate ratings after the grand final are higher in Adelaide which is SD than they are in Perth with HD and SD.

Why harp on the AFL as a reason for reconfiguring Sydney or Brisbane though?

Like it or not, the AFL is relatively unimportant in those two cities - normal AFL matches are regularly beaten by the news or talent/dating/cooking shows, while the AFL GF rates ~ 1/2 what the NRL GF or State of Origin matches do.

Probably time to take this aspect into one of the 7 threads.

Although I guess the digression is par for the course.

It does matter because it is preventing Sydney and Brisbane for having all of the most popular 7 programs from being shown in HD.

J Smith, you are unlikely to change the programming decisions of broadcasters on your taste, they only change in response the opinions of around 5 000 households in the 5 metro markets, (less in regional areas),  and what they view.

7 programs

Mate, I'd much rather American Pickers than Better Homes and Gardens for example... not sure about you there. ;)

You do realise that 7 will switch the main channel to HD again for the tennis, just like they did with the Olympics right? If it turns out to be on 7Mate only, well it will already be HD.

Personally I rarely watch the main channels now... I prefer ABC2 to ABC, I prefer 7Mate to 7, I prefer 11 instead of 10, etc.

I hope that News24 is somehow kept in 720p HD if they make the main ABC channel HD.

Most of what is on FTA nowadays is utter rubbish... so I spend much more time now watching BD movies and streaming.
