Ellil, just curious if you don't mind me asking - How come you're getting a Dennis design rather than someone local?

Same reason PeterM did, he's the best (and a moot point - to be honest cheaper than what I had been quoted previously from the local guys)

Single story extension...but I just found out yesterday that I want to raise the ceiling height of part of the room we are demolishing and the builder goes Id be up for a lot of money for that. Our sealing height is 2.4m heigh...I wanted at least 2.7m to 3m high just for the HT room, mainly coz I got some tall mates and there head almost hits my X55 when standing up...can u imagine them standing on a riser? lol. This ****ing sucks...Im starting to think I might as well just wait and buy a house in the next 2 yrs and remove ours...its on stumps so hopefully wont be too much.

I've never built before so have no idea, but would a vaulted ceiling be as expensive as a higher ceiling height for just one room? It doesn't seem to be radically different if starting from scratch, just a different bracing technique for one room. Plastering would cost more you'd suspect, especially if using whisper clips etc.

When I built it cost me a extra $7500 to up the ceiling from 2400mm to 2700mm for a 35sq house and that included increasing the Cathedral, well worth the money. I can't imagine why it would cost a ton more maybe the roof line would cause issues being a extension and not a new build?

I get that but if vaulted the roof line wouldn't change.

If you are extending then the roof line for the rest of the house would be 300mm lower therefore cost a fortune to do. The only way to get it done is to potentially have a large bulhead in the room where you can raise the ceiling 300mm and have a looooong overhang on the trusses. Hard to describe easier to draw and show.

One thing to think of if have not already is to pick one of the golden room dimensions for acoustics.

The one that worked for me was height x 1.5 for width amd height x 2.1 for length. This required 3 m ceiling.

My dimensions are 3m H x 4.5 wide x 6.35 deep. Having said this I have riser at back and stage t front that alters the height.

Did not cost much more on my house as it covered entire width of house . So just 30 cm higher.

So would find which room dimensions you need for best acoustics and Work from there.

The main problem is guys is that the room we are using for the HT room is the lounge room and nursery pretty much internal walls knocked out and extended wider for the HT....the roof is all part of it. Bloody hell its hard to explain lol.... He said he can do it but for a more substantial amount that im willing to pay for for an increase in ceiling height lol...20-30k approx lol.

Plus the misses also wanted the kitchen back wall knocked out and demolish the old rooms and make them bigger.............its turned into almost a new house lmao....the builder even suggested you might as well build a new home lol. We wanted to do an extension with everything we wanted all at once if it was cheaper...but its not really looking that way since we almost want most of the house gone lol.

Ahh well back to the original plan lol...new house next year!........anyone know how long plans from a draftsman last til we build?...If we can get a council permit even a year before we build and then once we are ready we can just get quotes and not fk around with the council all over again.

I actually wanted slightly bigger...around 4.8m wide and 7.0m long. Prior had 4.2 wide and 6.2 long but I will not be able to place my 3rd Submersive behind the seats since there was no room, its a big sub lol. So I need a bit more room for it to breathe!....3 meter ceiling is what I am shooting for. Ill have to come over in the next few weeks and have a look if you got enough room in your room for my Submersive ;) lol.

You could always have a sunken ht room to make up the height,

thou if ur existing floor is less than 400-500mm off the ground you'd have to

have a slab which would be costly also

Definitely got a lot to think about there :logik:

It's a daunting task with so many options, whilst trying to keep the budget in mind.

Thinking through things and discussing it (as you are) on the forums or with friends, is a great process. You'll come out the other end after ???? time, and have it all organized :)

Having a current set-up helps keep you grounded. No hurry

Exactly, Reno would of been nice if I was just adding the HT room but we were planning on gutting the whole house without even realising that we might as well knock this down and rebuild again since the cost is not much more. Our land is a decent size of 820m2 and a 16.5m frontage.......so lots of room to build a decent size house on here.

Good things come to those who wait lol. We will build next year for sure. This thread has been very good however in getting all the ideas and costings of certain equipment!.

Thanks a ton guys!

Priors may include the space behind the screen as have 1.5 metres in behind without false wall. If you are going false wall then yes you will need 7 metres length and 3.3m ceiling unless you can find another golden ratio.

You can store your submersive here until you build...lol I have room at the back of my room!

I've got the Warren Peterson book Minty mentioned and it's brilliant.

Apologies Justin, just been reading through this thread and I realised you mentioned you had that WP book several years back. I downloaded it sometime last year but had completely forgotten that you had recommended it in the first place. Anyway you were right back then and still right today, it is a brilliant read.

Seriously, anyone planning a room no matter how humble or elaborate, get hold of this book. For a $50 investment it's a fraction of what you'll spend on the room or equipment and it has everything covered. Really inspires at what can be achieved and especially how to do it correctly.

It should be mentioned each time a new build thread is started mate! Pfft no apology necessary at all.
